Hayward Mango still a growing boy.

All the growth above the wire fence is this years. And I did get 3 fruits. Despite the "Baileys Marvel" graft killed off two years ago...the rootstock plant is growing like the graft.tall,fast,and narrow. I dont understand it. The graft's fruit were tan colored,the rootstalk's were green with a very slight tan. Both sweet. I've been growing plants for many years,but this Mango chase has been the hardest work so far with them so out of their range. And this graft and then no graft is not something you find articles about. I do understand most would have tossed the tree out. I chose to give it a try.
From a 2' stick two years ago to near 6'.

Nice looking tree Stan....so.....what is the Hayward Mango - the rootstock? That would be a strange rootstock. But if the fruit is sweet, then I'd say you got lucky!

Great job Stan!! Its looking really healthy...I just love new growths on my fruit trees...especially mango :o)

I bet you get several more fruits next year...fingers crossed for a milder winter this year for us...

Hey Stan, I've been meaning to ask: so I'm slowly prepping my new backyard for putting in some trees. I still haven't made it out to Regan's yet, but it is on my list. When is a good time of year to plant trees? I'm mainly thinking mango, avocado, and maybe a suebelle for now. San Bruno doesn't get frost from what I can tell and not a ton of rain...

Stan, how big is the trunk near soil? You did a great job that having a few fruits and also managed to grow the tree that much. My HD Manila had 3 fruits first time this summer and so far has not sent out any new growth for this year, not even one inch after flowering. I have been pushing it with lot of water during the warm days but it just wants to sleep. Same for my Mahachanok.

Other trees without fruit have been growing fast this summer. One of the seedling -- could be Kent -- on its 2nd year and it added about 3 feet just this year. I think at this rate I might start having fruit in next 2 year. Seedlings seem to be much stronger than graft threes.

Mine did want to stop after flowering. That's when I started to feed it heavily. A organic bat guano sandy powder fertilizer and Vigoro pellet Tropical Plant Food. And when that spurred a flush a few weeks later?..I fertilized those flushes every time to get the tree out of "potted plant scaled growth" and get adult tree size leaves and stems.

Rhino- If you are up to covering them on a possible 32-33f night,then plant away. Avocado's and citrus would need a deep freeze. I figure we have at least 7 weeks of mild to warm. And the soils are as warm as they ever get.

The trunk is past the green stem look. It has some bark and about 2" wide? 4" diameter?
