Looks like Beautyberry (calicarpa americana). I think wine can be made with them. They may be edible, but I haven't ever eaten them.

I agree. This is not a tropical, this plant is hardy to zone 6. C dichotoma is really a prettier plant, we have several in the landscape. They are easy to root from cuttings, too.

I saw them inside Orlando's Disney theme parks, very eye catching. Good thing I didn't try to eat them, "highly astringent" according to wiki. 8-))
