I'm not sure if Lychee can be grafted onto Longan but I do know that Lychee is pretty difficult to graft. I would wait untill late spring to attempt to graft/top work your tree. Be sure to graft directly above a leaf node.

The USDA at Hilo Hawaii sent me an air layer of Kwa Luk (Hanging Green) Lychee and when I requested different varieties like No Mai Tsze, they said they could no longer send air layers but they could send you some free Scion Wood. They recommended I follow these instruction:

Is there a reason you want to graft other varieties/species onto your established Longan?

Many people don't know the trick of getting Longan to taste better. When the Longan are about pea size, you cut off half the panicle reducing the overall size of the panicle by 1/4 to 2/3. This will cause the remaining fruit to almost double in size and the fruit quality seems to improve considerably.

Hi Simon, I do remember reading your posts about your experience with grafting and USDA. I will definitely give them a try for scionwood, they no longer do airlayers.

The reason I want to try grafting on longan is that the tree is very healthy and big. I can easily airlayer another longan from it, but was wondering if Lychee can be grafted. No sure if anyone has ever done it, OR even been successful on Lychee on Lychee grafts. How is your airlayer that you got doing?

Hey behlgarden, I finally hardened the air layer and planted it in the ground. It is only slightly larger than when I orignially got it. When I kept it indoors, it grew very well. Both its root and leaves were beautiful, in fact the roots quickily outgrew the container I had it in. While indoors, it had one vegetative flush and the leaves were perfect in every way. Once I moved it outdoors, it had several growth flushes but about 80-90% of the leaves would get wind burn and shrivel and dry up. I recently erected a half assed windbreak and this growth flush that it is in appears much better.

It would be cool if Lychees can be grafted onto Longan. From what I've read, Lychee grafted onto Lychee grows very slowly. Grafting onto Longan may compound the problem since its a different genus even though they are closely related.

I am very keen to try this experiment. I will definitely call USDA in Feb and try to get some Scionwood of Longan and Lychees. then graft the heck out of my longan tree and see what happens.
