Weather Appraoching Winter 2011

I thought I would comment on our very warm and wet lead up to winter this year. We have had very little cooling and much more rain than usual. The effect, so far as I can see thus far is that many of the lychee trees are flushing out with leaves rather than being dormant...awating their push of bloom in January. I fear this will cause a reduction in the lychee crop. Admittedly, this is virtually an annual paranoia I have to deal with. These warm lead ups have, in the past, been followed by a really severe freeze. I remember making this comment in 2009 right around this time and just before we had record cold that knocked us for a loop (although it did kick the lychees into bloom). I am so hoping that this will be a warm winter with only enough cooling to get the lychee bloom going. California seems to be having freakish weather with early cold and then severe weather yesterday which included hail and tornadoes. I'd be interested to hear how other lychee grower's trees are doing in the bloom department.

All of mine have new flushes that just came out about a month ago. I am thinking this year may be a bust for me. Am am giving the lychees one more season after this year and then they are all geting chopped. So far since I planted them about 4 years ago I have got about a dozen emperor lychees total that I did not even like the taste of. Zero fruit from my Sweetheart, Zero fruit from my Mauritius, and Zero fruit from my Hak IP. I think it may have something to do with fruit set when it is cold. I have thousands of wasps around to pollinate, but no fruit set. It also seems like I don't get much of an overlap of viable male and female flowers.

All of my lychees except one have had recent growth flushes so I'm guessing no lychees this coming season for me . On the bright side my Longan tree has not had any recent growth flushes and is getting large enough to fruit so hopefully I'll see my first crop.

I totally agree, and the weather has been driving me nuts. Where are the cold fronts?

The past two seasons have had some early cold spells, and many of my mango trees, especially the mature ones, were flowering by now, at least their first bloom. Then another bloom followed in Jan or Feb. This year, almost Nada.

And the lychee's ... nothing... at least I have not seen any new leaf flushes ..

Hope to get something going sometime soon ...

glad I didnt book my annual florida lychee fest trip for memorial day as it seems like it might be a little late this year.
hoping you get a bloom push very soon.
so far the only one of my trees to bloom this year is my sweetheart. hoping for at least one other tree to bloom
