Planting a Leeland Cypress

Hello All,
My family and I opted to purchase a living Leeland Cypress instead of a chopped Christmas Tree. We want to plant it in our yard, but I have no idea how to go about it. I would love recommendations and or instructions from those knowledgeable. We live in Arlington Tx, we have clay soil, I can say from planting experience our yard is tough to dig deep in. I would like for this tree to thrive if possible, so any tips are greatly appreciated. It's 7feet tall and at the moment living in my living room in front of a large window. It doesn't get direct sunlight. When is the best time to plant, and should I move it outside until we plant it. This time of year it freezes often, so I don't want to harm it. Thank you in advance for all of your time and suggestions.

Hi there! Living Christmas trees are the best!

I have no Leyland Cypress but it is cold hardy in Arlington, you should get it outside as soon as possible. I would plant it now so that it has time to adjust before the heat kicks in.
The best part about digging the hole is that it only needs to be as deep as the soil surface that is currently in the pot. In my opinion, you should make the hole wider than the pot by 4 times at least but no deeper than the soil level.

A little tip that I learned about digging in clay soil is to mix up some plain dish soap or shampoo in your hose end sprayer and soak the spot the day before you plan to dig. Not sure why this works, but it softens the clay without making it sticky.
