It's harder to find this than you might think! I'm going to try it anyway. I took for granted(when I lived in CA) that most of what I ate was grown locally and hadn't been shipped 1700 miles. BELIEVE me the trip didn't do the produce any favors. PJ

There are probably other sites available, also. May I recommend the books "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, a Year of Food Life" by Barbara Kingsolver and "Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. The Kingsolver book is about her family's year of eating almost nothing but food grown by themselves and/or grown within 50 (or was it 75?) miles of their home. It's a very interesting book, with the exception that she assumes the reader knows absolutely nothing about where food comes from or how it's produced. That aside, it's a good read and shows the triumphs and troubles they had sticking to their resolve and accomplishing their goals.

Omnivore's Dilemma is more about where food actually does come from, and in typical Pollan style, narrows the subject down to 4 categories. He spends a majority of the book talking about corn and corn products, but does eventually branch out into other subjects. It's very eye opening, and I'd even say alarming, especially if you fall into the category Kingsolver assumes her reader is in, that is the people that know absolutely NOTHING about where their food comes from or how it's produced.

Sally - Thanks for those links. I checked out the Local Harvest site and I found three different farms all within an hour's drive from where I live. One of them stated they had a waiting list to get their produce though. They grow a lot of heirloom varieties. The other had beef and pork that was raised organically and also pecans. The other has poultry along with heirloom produce. I will have to check them out - especially later this spring when there will be more produce available.
