I've had this problem so I asked on a bird forum and they told me to put a very thin coating of vaseline on the top and about an inch down the sides, being sure to get in all the corners and joints. Thought it was good advice to pass on.

I put Vicks menthorub (no plain vaseline) on the top of the wires holding the hummer feeders to keep the ants out and it worked. No hummers, tho. BUT the finches and sparrows are feeding at the hummer feeders! Never seen such a thing before. :)

Probably not, but I hope they didn't rub in on their chests. It would make a mess on feathers.

If they are ornamental bird houses and you don't care if birds use them you can stuff them with with black netting. It doesn't show. I use black plastic deer net since I had some on hand.

Jim, it's waaay up on the top of the hanger, not running down to the drinker area. :P~~~~~
