Sending Condolences

My 22 yo daughter is in the Army stationed in Iraq. Last week I saw on the news that a young soldier was killed by an IED in the same area where she is stationed. Then last Friday she called me and said how sad it was that he died and told me that this soldier was just a kid of 21 and he was a nice guy. She said that she knew him just briefly before he got killed and that she was present at that event, but was not injured. I would like to send condolences to his family, but should I make reference to the statements that my daughter made? Is that comforting or would it be construed as something else?
