Depending on how dry the grass is, there might not be any, or very little, nitrogen left in it. You might want to poke around in the Soil forum, I'm pretty sure that's where I read that.

I would be afraid some of that cut grass would take root. Just make sure your newspaper layers are nice and thick. You can dunk them into a container of water before laying them down - makes it easier so they don't blow away. When I do lasagne gardening, I pile compost and mulch on top, but hardwood mulch would probably be okay alone since it breaks down pretty quickly.

Ok I also have several shipping boxes that I can cut up and I have a 55 gal drum filled with wood chips, I also have 6 giant bags of shredded paper alone with a box of back and white newspapers and 5 yards of mulch that I can also use with the grass clippings. In what order do I put things down first, second third etc?

Janet, you are going to need some nitrogen in with that mix. The wood binds the nitrogen up while it is decomposing (I think that's what they said), and it will not be available for your plants.

I would add some composted manure from WalMart- about $1.00 a bag, and sterilized. No seeds in it to cause you misery.

O.K. carry on. What order do you layer it in?

Cardboard next to the soil,
then grass clippings (not likely to take root unless there is some root attached, & if they were cut green, they will contribute nitrogen),
then cardboard/newspaper/shredded paper/autumn leaves,
then grass clippings/coffee grounds/kitchen scraps/etc.

I always try to keep a carbon layer on top-
nitrogenous material gets smelly.

An easy way to be sure the compost pile or lasagna project is balanced between browns (carbon) & greens (nitrogen):

If it isn't decomposing (if it's not getting smaller), add nitrogen.
If it smells bad, add carbon.

You can get a bag of alfalfa pellets at the feed store for added nitrogen. A little goes a long way.
