OT: Skinny Puppy

This is off-topic, I know, but I have come to value the opinions of the people on here, I've found that you all are sensible, responsible people who love living things.

On Craigslist this morning I saw a Boxer puppy some people are looking to rehome. The dog looks so thin, almost emaciated - you can see his ribcage and his hip bones. I am tempted to take the dog from them just to get it away from them, but I have two tiny kids, so I can't keep a Boxer. Is the responsible thing to take the dog, get it in good shape and find a new home for it, or to let someone else better equipped take on this burden?

My personal experience with a Boxer is that they are amazing with children. Saffy LOVED people more than I can describe. She was concious of where my (at the time) toddler was all the time. She could run in the house,"kidney bean dance"(wing her butt back and forth so much she looked like a bean! Hard to describe.)and not knock into either kid.
Her issue(I had to regrettably take her back to the shelter)was the fact that I had two other female dogs. She tried to change the pecking order and wouldn't quit picking fights for dominance. This is normal with female dogs.There are people who claim that only idiots try to keep a pack of larger female dogs. It's a PITA so I can't argue with much conviction. If you are looking in the paper for a dog I would give a boxer a second look especially if I had kids.
As for skinny...large puppies sometimes go through a lean phase. Like overly skinny teens that just can't keep wieght on. However, you might want to contact Boxer rescue and send them a link to the dog and see what they have to say. Sometimes they will negotiate for neglected boxer puppies. PJ

Check craigslist again;
that dog may be gone already.

If he's still available, I think the thing to do is to take him & then figure out where his permanent home should be.

Well, he's not on there anymore, I hope someone else took him and will fatten him up. I am a bit relieved to not worry about it anymore - which just demonstrates further how much of a sucker I am. Thank you Sylvia and pjtexgirl!

My family had a boxer when I was little. My brother was just a baby and was taking forever to learn to walk. Our boxer taught him how to walk. He would grab her little stubby tail to stand up and she would walk very slowly with him holding on. Yeah, I know it is not the most desireable thing for a baby to hold onto, but it sure did work. She was such a great family dog. I am glad to hear this dog found a new home. Hopefully it will get better treatment than at its previous home.
