Old Saying?

Hello all! Hope this post finds everyone in good health and good spirits!

I hope ya'll can help me solve a riddle.

My granny had a saying about it taking 3 years for a plant to get "set".

It was something along the lines of 'first year, roots; second year, foliage; third year, blooms'. Oh that is sooo vague. It was a little poem of a thing.

It's driving me nuts that I Can Not remember that saying.
Does anyone recognize this little ditty? TIA - Jo

That is not quite it...but I like it!
If the original saying never falls out of the out-of-season closet sitting on my shoulders, I may adopt this one
