trash service wouldn't pick up my root

We used a stump grinder to remove a tree stump this week and we dug out a section of root that is about 3 feet long and at the widest point about 4-5 inches. Our city provides yard trimming pick up, so I had three bags of yard trimmings and that one piece of root that I set out for pick up. The bags were full so I set the root right next to the bags and expected them to be picked up. They picked up the bags and left the root! I called the city to find out why it wasn't picked up and was told that if it is over 4 inches, they consider it a "log" and won't pick it up. I have to take this one piece of root out to the transfer station to drop it off for composting. How stupid is that?! I think I will put it in a bag with other "yard trimmings" and set it out for pick up next week because I am not wasting my time or gas to drive it way over to the west side of town to drop off.
