Just getting back to normal from Gustav and now Hannah, Ike, Josephine and maybe even Kyle are out there!

At least I'll be home to board up and carry in plants, now that I'm unemployed.

Tally HO!

Is unemployed a good or bad thing?

I thought there was a critical nursing shortage? Did you quit? Did the whole kit and kaboodle(medical center etc..) float away? Maybe it landed in Hawaii and you can work there! PJ

Yes, what's up Beachplant? More gardening time is probably good whether unemployment was by choice or not (good for leisure/good for therapy!). But, in this economy, if not by choice, not good!

Bad thing. I went to work on Monday, busy, mid-morning my supervisor said she needed to borrow me for a few minutes for a meeting. We went downstairs, I thought this is bad, what did I do? She opened the door & didn't come inside. The nurse manager for all the clinics-my big boss, the practice manager for our clinics and some guy from human resources were there. I was told that they had been looking at the budget & had to make cuts, my job was eliminated & I had until Nov. 1 to find new employement, resources were available to see if there was anything I would be interested in and that would have to be on my own time, and my supervisor was waiting to "escort me to collect my belongings". She then took me back upstairs, stood by while I cleaned out my desk and locker and watched me leave.

I ride a bike & asked if I could come back to get some stuff and was told no.

I'm getting paid to November 1 and still continue to receive the same benefits, accurals, etc. etc. So it's like I work there but I don't.

I went and talked to nurse recruitment yesterday, yes, there is an acute nursing shortage, UTMB has an entire deparment JUST to recruit RNs, I was told that the only thing they have to offer is inpatient, that they are "restructuring", all about the budget problems-this is at least the third consulting firm in 4 years, and that they are getting all the RNs out of everything except inpatient.
I've put in a couple of possible transfers there, am applying a few other places, looking. I'm going to relax for a couple of weeks and not worry yet. I am finally going to all my doctors too! Last week I had to cancel my doc appt. because I couldn't get off for an hour to go down 3 flights to see him, 3 days later they don't need me at all!!
I told the nurse recruiter I thought it was a terrible way to treat the very people we are trying to recruit. It doesn't really inspire me to want to stay.
Anyway, I'm catching up on working on the house, new bathroom floor this week! and relaxing. Anyone gets an urge to come to the island let me know, I'll be around.

Tally, what a bummer!! It seems there is no reward for hard work and loyalty these days. I just know you will find someplace more rewarding and better suited for you. I will be keeping positive thoughts. Keep us posted!!!

Tally, you haven't been "rescuing" plants out of their flower beds at night, have you? Ha! Just kidding. I hope something better comes your way.

Those budget cuts are all about replacing well paid jobs, with lesser paid jobs.....and of course, hiring in at the lowest salary level under the lower paid jobs.

Makes you feel good about having medical work done, now doesn't it?

Last one employed in the US, turn out the lights.

Well, you can thank one ex-president for the job cut. Once he allowed the cut of higher paying employees for lower pay employees. You can also be thankful for living in Texas were our state employer's have the right to get rid of anyone they wish no matter the reason.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your job, it sucks and I don't think there are many of us that haven't been there at one time or another. Hopefully you'll find something better and an employer who appreciates you.

DH and I are going on hope that he doesn't get bumped or laid off, getting bumped means cut in pay and that's not easy either. I'm not sure if I should feel at ease or not when it comes to his job, ever since 9-11 we haven't been secure ...Airline business

Your in my thought's and prayers. Barb

Barb, the airline business has no normalcy in sight. I now have pilots on either side of me, and they are living cautiously. (Just living in my neighborhood is a step down.)(smile)

You can thank Congress for the state's ability to circumvent what private business is obligated to. They are the ones who decided that state governments should be exempt. (So that the state can do whatever they like to employees.)

So sorry to hear that Beachplant. It's been a rough few years for you hasn't it?

I'm assuming that since you mentioned "only inpatient" jobs, you are emergency room or chemo/radiation or day surgery outpatient oriented? Are all those jobs being contracted out? I know a lot of emergency room doctors around the country are contract types, but I didn't know the nurses do that too.

It sure must feel like you're getting kicked around by fate and by UTMB. Good luck to you. Keep us posted.

Talley, looks like Ike is a headed in your direction, so you better watch out for him.

    We had better, also, Rick.
Tally, are you going to evacuate? I have an extra bedroom that you are more than welcome to.....

I think that nursing work is contracted out and has been for ages. It's called nursing agencies...temps, in other words. My daughter has done some moonlighting contracting out as an M.D. doing shifts in the ER. She's doing a fellowship in pulmonary medicine these days. The occasional ER shifts pay pretty well, but she doesn't have enough spare time to do it very often. About Ike, my brother and his family have already left. They live in Angleton, which is too close to the coast. DD and family and DS and her family are probably going to ride it out in Houston.

Tally, a few days ago I was putting planters up on something higher, and moving everything that would float or blow away. That was when they were predicting a Corpus landfall. And I'm near San Antonio ! But we were expecting all the bad flooding and tornadoes that go with Ike. Now it looks as though we're out of the danger of the worst of it.

My prayers are with you and everyone on Galveston Island as I watch the continuous coverage from Galv. on the weather channel. I can't believe that only 30-50% have evacuated. When you get home again, I hope you'll let all your friends on GW know how you fared. I'll try to keep an eye out for your post, but please feel free to email me later if you are interested in plants to replace anything you may lose. I have brugs -- I see they're one of your favorites -- and can start some for you. Don't be shy.

I'm so sorry for your job loss... it came at such a horrible time, didn't it ? I hope you find that it is a blessing in disguise, as I did 4 years ago.

    In my thoughts and prayers,
    patty (Castroville)

Tally - I'm sure you have already evacuated since you haven't replied to this thread in a couple days. I just hope you aren't on that parking lot headed north on I-45 and out of gas. Hopefully you have found refuge from the storm that is upon your part of the state.

I'm so sorry about your job, but glad they are giving you pay so you can keep your bills paid while you look for more work. I know in the DFW area there are plenty of job openings for nurses, so maybe it is time for a move to another part of the state? A friend of mine who is an RN teaches nursing at Texas Womens University in Denton a couple days a week, so maybe that could be an option for you since you have so much wonderful experience. Someone has to teach those new nurses who are taking your job and others how to do their jobs right.
