How big are they?

Can you post a picture of the foliage or plant or the seeds inside the pods?

Were they always brown?

No foliage. The stems were buried under a bunch of weeds.
Inside the paper pod is a green round bead like seed one seed in each pod. I guess the seed pods were always brown. The only thing that was planted in that flowerbed were white lantana's and 3 rose bushes. Weeds over running it. Hubby weeded it Friday and found several stems of these pods.

They kind of look like the Chinese lantern plant or even love in a puff. Is the seed black with a white mark on the side shaped like a heart?
