Grip on town watering

I was happy to see our town shut off the water when it wasn't needed. They waste way to much but then want to get onto us to NOT Water when it is low and have a lack of rain.

Well, their back to watering, having installed a new system the sprinklers are the raised type that sprays a light spray over the plants BUT also is a big waste running out into the street. With as much as water they waste I could water my whole yard, and to top it off they're watering everyday this week.

I'm wondering why they don't do a drip system?

Well, the government, at any level, is entitled to do exactly what they tell you not to do, by virtue of the fact, they are in control. (You probably thought the voters were in control.....NOT!)

The City of Allen has a water education specialist who gives presentations on where we get our water, the new lines coming in from Lake Chapman, ways to conserve water, etc. She has a sense of humor when she tells people that "no matter how much you water those sidewalks and streets, there isn't anything there that will grow."

If citizens here see a situation where the city is wasting water, they call the city and the city will do what is necessary to fix the problem, so not all municipalities are water wasters or bullies. You also have to look at the area that is being watered. Is it actual city property or is it in a shopping center or is the property owned by another entity, etc. There are places here in Allen where one would think the city is responsible, but it is actually another party, so the city has to contact whoever is responsible to fix the problem. I know that the shopping center where Target is at here in Allen has been really bad about overwatering since the ground is squishy most of the time and businesses have put in stepping stones or gravel so their patrons can at least walk into their business without getting muddy. The city has notified this company multiple times.

But, now that watering restrictions here are lifted here and the weather is cooler, we can water as needed anytime of the day. Now, most people who have any kind of brain matter between their ears will still do what they can to conserve and water only as needed, but there are some who think it is okay to water multiple times a week and that ain't good.

If there are situations in Lewisville or whatever municipality you're in, contact your water department to find out what you can do about getting those problem areas fixed.

Denise, it is the parks department in charge of our mediums that just planted pansies as well as installing new sprinkler system. They also planted a century plant so they don't know what their doing.
I've seen a lot of mistakes of planting by the parks department. I made my own mistakes in the beginning and will make mistakes in the future but I do know that planting an agave with pansies is wrong. Although I don't know everything and even with all the research or reading lots of magazines does not make me an expert.Nor does what works for me work for another. Gardening is a funny thing. There have been plants that others say you cannot kill it, Well I did .... poor thing. Even though I do everything someone tells me or read on how to grow the plant it didn't work out.
It's just a grip of mine and I have talked to the person in charge but he doesn't care :(

Rick, Don't even get me started on politics. I hear ya :)

Barb - Have you ever considered being on the Park board with your city? I know here in Allen they allow citizens to apply for a spot on certain city boards so they can have input on topics that affect that part of the city's operations. I'm sure most towns must have something similar. Or, find out who specifically is in charge of all this and go talk to them. They might appreciate your input.

It sounds like they would have been better off with using a drip irrigation system - the brown tubing kind that has the holes every 10-12 inches would be perfect for medians and keep the plants watered without going out into the streets.

Call TRCC. It is illegal to install a sprinkler system that dumps water onto the streets. PLUS depending on where you live you must have plans for your sprinkler system proving that it provided 100% coverage & some cities have mandated how much/little water must be provided-inches per hour.
I think it's still called TRCC.

Denise, Good point and one I wouldn't mind doing if it wasn't for me having to much on my plate already.
Caring for my dad and trying to take care of myself I'm a bit over loaded.
Tally, I've never heard of TRCC is this Texas Residential Construction Commission ? I'll check into it and see what I can do.
    Thanks for the info. Barb

I think Tally means TNRCC, Barb, but not for sure.
