I personally would pot it and keep it in a sunny window until our temps stabilize. What kind of ginger is it? I keep butterfly ginger (Hedychium ) and hidden ginger (Curcuma ) outside but planted when it was warm. They and pine cone or shampoo ginger (Zingiber ) are hardy in our zone.

I don't check this side of the forum often, but it's been so quiet with the holidays approaching, I'm 'hungry' for some conversation :-)

Hi pkponder - It is called hedychium chrysoleucum.
I was, not prepared to plant it during our freezing temps.
So, I did as you advised and potted it up.
Do you, have any other advice about this ginger?

I've had this one for years in the garden. Plant it shallow (seriously just below the soil surface like iris) and in a place where it gets morning sun, afternoon shade. Butterfly ginger needs some sun to bloom (in the fall) but if it gets too much, the leaves will burn up and look crispy. It's a delicate balancing act. It would love some composted manure or alfalfa pellets to boost the growth and prefers a rich soil.

If it gets tall inside, I would suggest trimming it to 12" or so when planting because it's really difficult to get the taller plants to stay upright when you plant them shallowly. They tend to flop over. If you want you can use stiff wire bent in roughly a staple shape to hold them down until the roots take off. I need to get out and lift mine this spring, I bet the roots have grown down quite a bit, I got no blooms this fall.
