WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Woo-Hoo!

Winter's still blowing, but it's really a last gasp:
the days are getting longer & sunnier, green plants are poking their heads out from under their mulchy "covers", & it's...

Time for the gardeners' version of "Spring Break"!

The Spring Swap meets every year at Trinity Park, across from the Ft Worth Botanic Gardens (very handy for those who still have the energy to take a turn through those gorgeous gardens after the get-together!)

More than just a swap, it's an opportunity to put faces to names, to visit our compadres, & to exchange garden wisdom as well as those things that pass from hand to hand.

We share food that ranges from snacks to "real food".
(gotta keep up our strength).

I noticed that the San Antonio Swap group is having prizes & want to put it before the congregation:

Y'all wanna have prizes?

At the SA swap, each person brings something extra to be given away, such as a plant in a nice planter, books, crafts, etc.

All the items are placed together, & tickets are drawn to give them away.

Our get-togethers have always been so loosely structured that getting everybody together to award/draw for/distribute prizes has been, well, it just ain't happened.

But if the traders decide to have prizes, I *am* working on an old-fashioned-looking ceramic bowl, destined to hold a wonderful new (to me) burgundy/bronze/green sedum...

or I could bring an alligator.

He's cute, he's small, & he's ceramic too.

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Finally - a swap in my area - I can't wait to finally attend one!!!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

"Time for the gardeners' version of "Spring Break"!"

Yeah, but I hope this time that ya'll will keep your clothes on ;).

You know me, I'm in. I really hope that some of the other locals that have missed the Fort Worth swaps in the past will attend. I've got about 20 nine-pack flats of seeds started so I hope to have lots to share. I'm looking forward to it, as always :).

I'll defer to all others as far as the prize thing goes.

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Oh I've so wanted to go to a swap and this is relatively close - at least son lives in Keller.

I don't have anything to trade though we are so new to this area and just starting to work with the gardens.

Can I come and meet people? See who is who?

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Of course Amber. I would think it would be nearly impossible for you to go home empty handed whether you bring anything or not. LOL, none of us wants to take anything home that we brought :). We'll have our hands full with everything we've traded for. It's a nice swap and I am sure you'll enjoy it.

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I really doubt that I will be in Fort Worth but remember you don't have to just bring plants. I started out by bringing some really large Texas Honeycomb rock that some filled the holes with potting soil and used as planters. Others have brought tools that they no longer want/need, books, maybe a pot that looked nice from the store or somethig. Garden related. That is the name of the game.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Well you know I'll be there. I know I'll have some roses just not sure which ones yet. I can't wait.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Yay!

Venessa is our resident "Rose Witch":
She can twitch her nose & twinkle her eyes & those roses just *grow*!

& she always has many wonderful things for the swaps!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap Prizes

just got an email from Tina (purplegardens);
she's bringing a gift basket of her wonderful skin care products as a prize!

& I just know that at least one of my pots, or my alligator, or *something* is going to come out so gorgeous that y'all will all love it/them!

NOTE:
This does *NOT* obligate anyone else to bring a prize!

Our swaps have always been very free-wheeling & generous,
& I don't want them to ever change in that respect.

As of today, there are 2 prizes available, so we'll draw 2 tickets for them at the swap.

I don't want the swap to change from what it is into something that will make demands on any of us (no mandatory donations, no collecting money for supplies or main dishes, etc.)

We share what we share.

(but y'all will like both these prizes!)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I'm going to do my best to get to this one, having missed the last spring and fall swaps. I like the idea of prizes, I'll have to see what I can bring. Looking forward to it. Brenda

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

It sure is quite. Is everyone out finding things to bring to the swap? I know I've been out cleaning beds to see what I have. Don't forget to start your wish list, you never know what someone may have alot of.

I am going through my roses and I also found some hot pink perennial Salvia.

I'm definitely looking for some purple coneflower.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Venessa, I'll bring you some coneflower if it appears by the date of the swap, not sure just 'zackly where it is!

(I bet everybody's out in the sunshine;
yesterday was so awful, & today was so nice, & tomorrow's "a school day".)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

"Of course Amber. I would think it would be nearly impossible for you to go home empty handed."

Bwaaa Haaaa Haaaaa!

This swap is a prime example of garden enabling!

I've got many plants that I never would have thought to look for at, say, a garden center, that I just love.

& my tiny water garden is the direct result of one of the FW Swaps.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I've decided that since I don't have plants to swap, I'll bring some aprons! Made up what I think is neat design to do on them too.
So what I'd be looking for is anything that doesn't require full sun or tons of water. . . but then I did make a bog so could use stuff like that too. Shade loving, drought resistant ground covers 'cause we don't have grass, just leaves. moon flowers, hyacinth bean vines, Texas natives. . . . I know. . . tomatoes that will grow and fruit in part sun!!!

This could be fun!!

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Worked in the yard this past weekend and I honestly don't know what I will have to bring to the swap. Maybe I'll bring a grill and cook hot dogs with all the fixins to trade for plants lol

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dorothy that is one cute design!
Can you put it on a tank top or tee shirt?

I have a variegated something-or-other that a neighbor gave me a couple of years ago;
it may be a type of vinca.
It'll grow in bright shade.

If my moonflowers/datura are up by then, I can bring you some of the single-flowering white (the old-fashioned kind).

& I'm trying to start hyacinth bean in plastic jugs, my first attempt at a sort of "winter sowing", so maybe I'll have some of that, too!

Today I cut back the Dusty Miller & put about half of the cut-off pieces in pots;
if they root, I'll bring some to the swap.

& of course there are my famous 4 o'clocks!
They're so easy to grow:
I have a *hedge* of them in bright shade.

Brenda/barefoot, I love your idea!
Food always cheers me up!

(If I could trade plants for food every day...I could spend the grocery money *at Northaven Gardens!*)

I can bring:
mauve crinums
milk & wine crinums
century plant
probly have salvia Black & Blue by then
orange Kwanzo daylilies (cannot be killed, absolutely cannot)
vinca
sedum Autumn Joy
mauve 4 o'clocks
yarrow Paprika
maybe iris Well Endowed (brilliant yellow re-bloomer, looks like somebody turned on a neon light!)
iris Crimson King: really a dark burgundy/purple, it's an oldie, the very first one to bloom, & it often blooms again around the end of May or the first part of June.
canna Conestoga (tall lemon yellow)
canna Indica Indian Shot (coral red species type flowers, medium height)
can't remember what else.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

yes, we can put the design on anything that fits on our machines.

I'm really getting excited about this swap - so many goodies!!

OMG - four o'clocks! It there is one that that we had way too much of its those things! They are all over the place. A neighbor was horrified seeing me pull them up but really, they are down right invasive! and durable and resistant. They were taking over everyplace - this property was neglected for years.

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I've become a fan of 4 o'clocks:
these grew when nothing else would, bloomed all summer with no extra water, & made huge rhizomes that loosened the soil.

I've got some in bright shade that bloom beautifully & a few in hot western sun that don't bloom quite as much, but they grow to 4' or 5' tall every summer & look fresh when everything else is wilted.

&, as you say, the seedlings are easy to pull.

I used to call the radio station on-air "flea market" & give them away, but now I post them on freecycle.

There's always someone who needs an easy-to-grow flowering plant.

Cannas are another easy-to-grow old-fashioned plant that I've come to love.

All you gotta do is give them sun & a little extra water in the summer, & plant them someplace out of the wind, & you've got big showy "tropicals" for about, what, 6 months?

Roses, too, I've found to be not nearly as much trouble as their "diva" reputation.
All you have to do is get the old-fashioned varieties or some of the newer varieties like the David Austins, & you in bidness!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I'm checking my schedule to see if I can come. I'd really love to meet you all and have somebody to talk to who shares my hobby! ("Hobby" isn't actually the right word, is it? "Addiction" or "Need" or "Way of Life" sound closer to the truth.)

This will be my first garden swap ever. Since I'm starting from scratch, I won't have many actual *living things* to trade, unless some of you would like some bugleweed or grackles--I have an abundance of both! I have two pretty gardening books which I've finished but still look brand new. I can bring refreshments, too. I like the prize idea, and maybe I can bring something to add. A new bird feeder, maybe?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Welcome, bo!
I'll bet you'll love the swap:
We all share your...
"hobby"?
"addiction"?

Someone on another forum, I think it was Soil Compost & Mulch, once said:

"There's a fine line between hobby & mental illness."

I'm fond of that saying.

makes me smile.

might like to have a needlepoint sampler with that saying...

 o
RE: Yes , Dorothy, Bo berrin ,everyone please come!

Hello Everyone ! I totally agree, with Sylvia! There is a fine line between hobby & addiction! Oh, don't worry if you have no plants to trade. You will have a great time. And, meet some wonderful people. I too, like the apron design! Wow!
Okay, fellow gardeners - here's what I'm bringing :
Several 12 - inch ( the large pots ), that are filled with perennials. Here are some of the plants that will be in them:
All of these plants require some sun.
Scented pink Petunias/reseeds.

Sedum/ Autumn joy-pink-/multyplies.
Hot pink 4'oclocks/ reseeds.
Scented - Double purples Iris/smells just like grape koolaid.
Scented creeping phlox - blue/multyplies.
the old orange Daylillies/multyplies.

And maybe some other plants, cause that is all I can recall.
These pots were made up last spring, but no one wanted them.
Several long rectangular planters & some round pots various sizes.
1 - pot green & gold vinca /blue flower/for shade.

1- pot of spearmint/part shade.
2 - rolls of some thick plastic border material.
some tomato cages.
some gardening books.

I am looking for :
Whiskey barrel planters or something that size. As long as it, will fit in my van! I am condensing, a few beds.
Bags of mulch.
Tropicals.
Herbs.
Vines.
Groundcover.
Perennials.
Ornamental grasses.
Anything variegated!
Well, you get the idea. I have never met a plant, I didn't like!

I will keep looking around the garden, but for now that is all I have found.
May update this list,later.
Happy gardening, see you all at the swap.

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hey all, I'm just chimming in. I should be able to make the swap. Not sure what I will have as of yet but there are a lot of thing's popping their little heads up, so long as nothing get's killed from this cold blast tonight it might be safe to start digging before long.
I've got lot's of seeds I'm hoping to spread out within the next few weeks if time allows it.
Give me another two or so weeks before reporting back with what I can bring but one thing I know for sure I will have aloe vera pups.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

What time should I get there?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Mornin', mommyfox!

We start at 10 AM & "swap til we drop".

(which is usually about 2 PM for even the toughest of us!)

& since the FW Botanic Gardens, Rose Gardens, & Japanese Garden are just across the street, & the FW Zoo is just down the street, & the Kimball Art Museum, FW Museum of Science & History, & Omni Theater are just on the other side, people sometimes make a day of it.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

maybe, just maybe, I can get there. As usual will have a rose or two, doubt if I have much else.

Weldon

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Yay!

Weldon, along with Venessa, is another one who has the "rose gene"!

Lemme know if I can bring you cuttings, Weldon.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Okay, I'm definitely going to make this one. Will trade hot dogs, chips and cold drinks for anything. Sylvia - would love to have a couple of those mauve four o'clocks and a black and blue salvia. I also should have some silver and gold chrysantemums to bring and some aloe veras. That's all I know for now, but we'll see what pops up between now and then.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I don't know what I'll be bringing but
Silvia I would love some of your mauve 4 o'clocks, daylillies & both of your Iris's - both sound beautiful

Tina_2 I would love some of your pink 4 o'clocks & your Iris & some of your mint
also the rectangular pots - shoot anything big enough for me to garden in.

Dorothy the aprons sound like a great idea

I'll see what I can find to add to the prizes
Sounds like we're gonna have a great swap
Debbie

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Okay, here is a partial list of what I will have to bring to the swap.

Several Four nerve daisies
1 Jamaica yellow WELL rooted brugmansia
1 Southern Shield Fern
Several cuttings of variegated vinca major
Several pottings of liriope
Several Turk's Caps
Several Gayfeather
Several purple bearded iris
If someone requests them, I will bring one or two heirloom tomato seedlings. These are very vigorous right now and should be blooming by the time of the swap. Will definitely have to pot up to gallon size containers by then.

I am still sowing seeds, so if anything looks good by then or if I can think of anything else, I will update my list :).

Kristi

 o
Re: Yes, our swap sounds wonderful!!

Hi all - Great to hear from more friends. I remember you 2- from the last swap! For Debbie- I will save - large pot w/ iris /4oclock/mint & the rectangular pots.
From Kristi - I would like ss fern & t.cap - Thank you.
I must add to my ''have list'':
For pickup from my home (it won't fit in my van):

It is 10 foot long by 4 foot wide, bring a pickup & a rope to haul it.Also, a black -tub/barrel w/old timey hand pump for looks. It was a fountain , will look for the parts. Oh, would love to find a Coleus plant for dh , he loves them!
See y'all - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I would like a couple of turk's cap too!!

And, where does one find hyacinth bean vines/seeds?

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Looks like I'll be there! I'm not quite sure how a swap works. Is it set up on tables like a yard sale or more like a "tailgate party" out of our vehicles? How is a trade negotiated? Is there "swap etiquette" I should be aware of? (Should I be asking this here or in the other forum?)

I have:

1) two gardening books

2) a Mary Kay "Satin Hands" Pampering Kit Gift Bag (approx. $25-30 value) which works like a day spa for the hands after a rough day in the dirt (I could bring two if there's any interest in something like this at a garden swap. I also have BeautiControl self-warming skin masks for the same purpose.)

3) red opium poppy seedlings sown (sowed?) last fall, and coming up like crazy. The seeds were given to me a couple years ago by a woman with a crazy-beautiful garden. I couldn't get over the size of the blooms on her poppies and how prolific and beautiful they were. She gave me some of the seeds from them which she had harvested the year before, and which she had stored in a labeled film canister in her freezer. I didn't know if they'd really grow, having been stored in her freezer and then mine for so long, so I put out LOTS of seeds. It appears that every single one sprouted and some leaves are already about 3 inches long.

I'm looking for any of the following:

crossvine
daylilies
wisteria
clematis
red pentas
lantana (especially red or yellow/pink kind)
bridal veil spirea
four o'clocks
crape myrtle (especially dark red or white)
passion vine
hosta
trailing variegated vinca
lilac
herbs
bell peppers
hot peppers
trailing rosemary (Rosemary Prostratus)
any pretty, drought-tolerant or -resistant plants
pond equipment in working condition
small statuary (a small St. Francis of Assisi or angel)
a pretty glass hummingbird feeder
an oriole feeder (the kind that holds grape jelly & nectar)

Despite many, many attempts, I've never been able to successfully grow anything from a cutting, so I try to avoid those. I've had success with bare root, bulbs, rhizomes, seeds, and pots.

Is it April yet? ;-)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Tina I'm interested in your green house frame. If nobody has a good trade for it then please think of me.
Thanks,
Debbie

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Bo - I would be interested in some poppies.
Tina_2 - I would be interested in your tub/barrell w/old timey hand pump. Also the silver and gold chrysanthemums that I have are varigated and semi-evergreen, if you are interested in those.
Remudal - would love your heirloom tomatos and a turks cap if you have a spare.
What nobody wants food? :)

 o
RE: Great!!

Hi Bo berrin - I would love some of the red poppies, since none of mine came up. I will bring, some plants for you.

Barefoot - the black barrel fountain is yours. The mums sound great! Thanks - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Barefoot: I've got you down for turk's cap and a tomato.

Dorothy: A couple of turk's caps for you. I would love to have one of your aprons.

Tina: Turks cap and fern. If you still have some of the purple iris/perennial pots, I would like one.

Sylvia, if you have any of your iris Well Endowed, I would be interested in it. Do I have anything you might want to swap for?

Note: Just potted up the ferns today. Thought I only had three total, but three turned into six so I have 3 more left. These ferns do better in more sun than others and grow to 3X3. Let me know.....

Tomorrow, I will take the axe after the turk's cap! If I missed anyone, please let me know.

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hi everyone, it's so great to see that everyone is getting organize for the plant swap. I will plan to attend, but don't know exactly what I will have yet. I will definitely get my list together soon.
I do have something this weekend if anyone is interested. My sister and I are digging up all the bushes in her front yard. She lives in the Lewisville, TX area. I believe she has about 4 holly bushes about 2 to 3 feet tall and two lite purple crepe myrtles about 6 or 7 ft tall. Please email me if you are interested and I will send you the address.
Thank you.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hey, barefoot, who you talkin' to??
I'm always interested in food!

I'll bring you some mauve 4 o'clocks & some Salvia Black & Blue.

Venessa, I have a purple coneflower for you.

Dorothy(ambersas) I'm going to try to find a tank top or tee shirt for you to logo for me, & in return I'll put back some moon flowers, examples of any bog plants that appear (how about Louisiana Irises? I have some purple ones), & I'll see what I can find in the way of hyacinth bean seeds or vine.
I also have variegated vinca that grows well in dry shade, & I think I have some green ones as well.
Just let me know what you do/don't want.

bo, I'd love some red poppies;
I have 4 o'clocks, chocolate mint, some other mint which I can't identify, maybe doublemint, & I may have wisteria & crepe myrtle, depending on what apears by the time of the swap.

debbie do, I can bing you 4 o'clocks, daylilies, & both kinds of iris, Crimson King & Well Endowed.
(If you don't find any garden stuff to bring, I always love extra-chocolate brownies & such!)

Kristi, yes, I'll pot up some Well Endowed for you, & I'd love to have some tomato seedlings.
If you have extra fern or gayfeather, I'd love those.

Note to the group:

I am now totally, officially around the bend.
Yesterday I stopped at a construction site & asked the guys if they were going to go around a clump of irises or if they were going to smush them.

& you know the answer.

One thing led to another.

I *just happened* to have my garden fork in the trunk, & some boxes & bags in the car.

So I started digging.

Those things hadn't been touched in about 50 years,
& I was getting nowhere fast.

The backhoe operator watched me as long as he could stand it, & then he offered to dig for me.

& the garden fork broke.

so he got back into the driver's seat & got those irises out with a backhoe!

So I have lots of really hardy irises, no idea what kind, that could use homes.

Hello, my name is Sylvia, & I'm a plantaholic.

(& all the construction guys in DeSoto now know it!)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I also have a 2-3 years of Garden Gate magazine with the yearly index and Gardening How To if anyone is interested. Also several issues of Birds & Blooms. Oh and for a prize I'm either going to bring a really nice wind chime or a really nice hummingbird feeder (or maybe both). Can't wait to see/meet everyone.

 o
RE: WOW! What a bunch of swappers we are!

Hi - This, is certainly going to be a wonderful swap!

Kristi - I will save a big pot of perennials for you. If there are any ferns left, my sis-in-law would like some.

Sylvia - You plantaholic!lol Please save me sev. of the unknown Iris, that you got from the construction site.
And I wish, I was brave enough to do that! You are so brave girl!
Thanks - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia, those sound great! And I'd love a mystery iris, and if you have a Well-Endowed to spare, or a Kwanzo daylily, that would be awesome too.

Really getting excited, now! I can't wait!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7

Okey dokey tina!

will also have some Artemesia Oriental Limelight, a beautiful foliage plant that I got from Venessa a couple of swaps ago.

This stuff is wonderful:
it's sort of apple green & pale lemon/lime variegated (who wanted variegated?), grows in full to part sun, survives drought, & spreads like a rumor!

I have a lot of it, can bring several small but rooted plants.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Yes, bo, I'll bring you some mystery iris & Kwanzos (Kwanzos are like potato chips & guppies; there's no such thing as "one"!) for sure, & I'm pretty sure I have enough Well Endowed, so I'll bring that.

I need to see how many I have & can't do that til they bloom, so I better not promise any more Well Endowed until I know for sure that I have enough.

but I should have some Blue Mist Flower by then, & it's a wonderful wonderful butterfly plant, grows in horrible clay, blooms in a drought, & spreads!

anyone think you might want some Blue Mist Flower?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

LOL, Blue Mist for me please!!

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

We have several Canna's that my next door neighbor Donna's son dug up the other day, I can't remember what color. We also dug up several paper shell pecan tree's, I won't know how many til I see if we got enough of the roots & I'm waiting to see what else pops up.

Sylvia you got double chocolate brownies coming & would ya put a few of your mystery irises to the side for me too.

Ya know I've stopped & asked for extra rock from construction sites that were building a rock wall but LOL I've never seen any wonderful plants that needed rescuing, just think what their fate woulda been if you didn't take pitty on em. haha Backhoes are great for digging up tree's & lol clumps of irises, so if'n you ever see something else go right to the backhoe driver & save your back. haha

 o
re: wow-wow , bluemist flower!!!!!

Hey - You guys, should be all over that bluemist flower!
I got a ''serious clump'' from Sylvia last summer.
And boy howdy, it bloomed it's head off (wish I had taken pics.), was sooooo blue & beautiful!!! Sorry Sylvia - didn't mean to make more work for you, but I thought it was gourgeous!!!
Debbie- got a brownie for me too?
tina_2

 o
RE: Hey Bo berrin

Oh, swap ettiquette -I can't even spell it. As you see , we all just ask "or beg, we are so spoilt> for a particular plant & that's it. We are all, really laxxed? I guess, you could say. So, bring the tailgait, hatchback, suv, trailer or what have you. Just load your stuff up & get there.
I am sure, you will have a great time. Right guys?
We always enjoy ourselves, right Vanessa,Sylvia, Weldon, Debbie, Kristi ? Let's give some encouragement here.

So are you a comin? tina_2

 o
RE: Hey Dorothy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please....If you have a spare apron -I would love one. Because, I do a lot of home cooking. My fam. calls me ''gardenbug''.
Thank you - tina_2

 o
RE: Hey Debbie

I would love some cannas. Thanks - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

"Oh, swap ettiquette -I can't even spell it."

Well, folks, there you have it.

That's kinda the way we all act!

& as for keeping our clothes on...
I have no comment to make on that subject.
(holding hand over face as flashbulbs pop)

Kristi, I've got blue mist flower down for you.

just talked to Bobbie Mason (remember the iris lady who had a swap at her home in Red Oak one year, & who showed up at one of the swaps with a giant trailer full of plants?).

She hopes to be able to come to this one, too.

She always has the nicest plants, & she's quite a lot crazier than I am:
she probably would have run that backhoe herself!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

This definitely sounds like my kind of group! :) Thanks for the hearty welcome!

I'm bringing poppies for Sylvia, Barefoot and Tina_2, and I've been looking around for any other kind of thing that might be swapable besides those I already mentioned earlier.

C'mon April!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Ok this is going to be fun. I still haven't got around to making a list of my roses but I know most of them will need new homes. I have to make room in the greenhouse for the perennials I'm sowing.

I have 2 wood orchid holders. They are very simple looking with wire hangers.

I will also have 1 maybe 2 (not sure yet) starts of fall aster.

I may have a start of copper canyon daisy if I can figure out where I can seperate it.

I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.

I am looking for any sun loving perennials and would really love a brugmansia if anyone has extras.

Will get back with a list of my roses as soon as I can.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Bo Berrin,

I wasn't sure before, but it looks like I will have one extra seedling of the jalapeno pepper and a Beauty Bell Pepper. If you're not out of Poppies yet, I'd love to find these a home :).

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Kristi, you got it! Peppers are so delicious, but so expensive. That's one plant that really earns its keep, huh?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Bo,

Here are my jalapeno plants from last year

That's a 6 foot ladder behind them. The trunks were 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter. I had to freeze a ton of jalapenos.

Here's a picture of one of the many harvests I made

Last year was also the first time I had to make ristras. LOL, I had them coming out of my ears.

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia - I would love blue mist flower. Pretty please.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Kristi,

Well, I'll be! Who knew jalapenos grew on TREES! Forget about the pepper plants, I want to trade for your SECRET. (That or your magic beans!) That's amazing!!!

Is it April YET???

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Tina_2 I'll have brownies for you too! Also will put ya down for some canna's

Tina_2 also do ya like banana or pumpkin bread? If ya do then maybe I can trade the brownies & bread for your greenhouse frame?

Sylvia after hearing Tina rave about the bluemist flower, well I just gotta have some lol Donna will love it or be mad if all the bflys are at my house again this year.

Oh I'm working on having some lambs ear rooted for our trade so should have several to trade.

I'm also hoping that the Ranunculus bulbs sprout out by then too, I didn't have 1 sq inch in the house to try & get anything started earlier.

My plants seem much happier now that I've got them all moved back outside they're loving the weather & I can already see new growth.

 o
RE: Hey Debbie / Kristi .

Did you say Banana or Pumpkin bread? Oh, dear hold me back girls! Yes, I love them (but hold the nuts please).
The cannas, great! I am ready for this swap.
Kristi - Dh- just informed me that the bed he is creating for veggies, will be ready soon. So, if you have any of the veggy plants left- can I have some please?
Thanks all. tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I have 12 aprons ready for trade; you can see a fair picture at the link (I don't know how to include it in the message - hint, hint)

But, how does this swap thing work?? Seems like you need to put 'dibs' on things before hand?

Dorothy

Here is a link that might be useful: apron2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dorothy,

I LOVE the apron! I hope you have me down for one! As you can see, we've all been arranging "pre-trades" on this thread. We also usually bring extras to trade for things that have not been listed on the thread (like with Sylvia's friend Bobbie). As previously mentioned, none of us like to bring anything back home that we brought to the swap. Usually, the trades take place, then we all try to give away everything that we have left :). It's a good idea when bringing plants to swap to go ahead and write the name of the person who is receiving them on the container, or mark it in some way. This helps to limit the confusion and helps keep it to where everyone goes home with what they are supposed to.

I came home from my first swap (same time last year) with WAY too much stuff. That was before I had my new raised beds in and all of those plants stared at me everytime I went outside as if to say "Do you think you could get us in the ground sometime in this millenium?". LOL, I finally got them all in the ground and that's how it starts!

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I have blue mist flower on my list for barefoot & debbie.

Dorothy, I'd like to have an apron, too; seeing it made me change my mind about looking for a tank top for that logo: that is one cute apron!
I have you down for vinca, green and/or variegated, such bog plants as emerge in time, La iris for sure, & moon flowers & hyacinth bean vine if they emerge in time. I also put down "Texas natives", will have to window-shop the garden & see what's there; I do know I have a couple of packets of wildflower mix seed that the City of Ft Worth says are well-suited to our area.

For pre-trades, I put each person's stuff in a box with a *huge* label on it, with the person's name, the list of plants in the box, & what they're bringing me as well.

If there's only one pot, or maybe a pot that's too big to go in a box, I put a huge label on the pot.

Staples or packaging tape usually work well.
(just do as I say, not as I do: If you use staples, be sure to keep your free hand out of the path of the staples. Last year I was holding the top of a cardboard box with one hand to steady it, thumb on the front side, fingers on the back side, had the stapler in the other hand...won't be doing that again!)

I planted some garlic in little pots the other day, & it's already shooting upward! & now there're more sprouts on the garlic in the kitchen (cannot bring myself to eat something that's sprouting), so I'll be planting some more.

& the Dusty Miller cuttings haven't visibly croaked yet, so I'm sending them positive thoughts & keeping them damp!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

OK I have names on 4 aprons (Sylvia, Tina, Debbie, Kristi). This sounds like a lot of fun - looking forward to it.

Has it ever been mentioned where this is to be held?? If it was I missed it. So, maybe the beginning of April somebody can send me directions please?

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Tina, sorry I missed your post. I know I won't have any extra peppers. But could have another tomato. If I do, it's yours.

Dorothy, thank you for the apron and the swap is at Trinity Park across the street from the Botanic Gardens.

Sylvia, since we all had some trouble last fall finding eachother, could we just have it at the same spot we had it then? There was a picnic table there and a small parking lot. What do you think?

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

We've always tried to hold the Swap just beyond the pavillion (you have to reserve the pavillion, & we usually aren't in the park all day, so we never have done that), where there are parking spots & picnic tables.

Then one time the park was under construction, so we had to stop short of "our" area.

Then I think last time, whoever got there first just pitched tents & opened for business wherever there was a convenient open space & picnic tables.

I think the spot just beyond the pavillion is the best one:
it's beyond the traffic, & it puts us pretty much out of the way of errant volleyballs & big dogs.

Plus, if the pavillion isn't occupied & the sky opens up, we're close to cover.

To get to the area, just follow the winding trail past several parking lots.
The trail eventually turns so that you're headed more or less north, & then you'll see the pavillion on the right.

Cruise slightly past it (to give its occupants room to park), & park near the first picnic table.

can't miss it!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7

Dorothy, it's very easy to get to the Park:

From I-30 on the western edge of downtown Ft Worth, go north on Montgomery.

There's an entrance to Trinity Park just *right there* on the right.

Drive in & meander along the winding path til you pass the pavillion or until you see a whole bunch of people standing around with pots & pots of plants!

(forgot to say on the post above, if "our" area is occupied, then the first person to arrive has to continue on out of the park, go back in at the entrance, & find a clear space).

I didn't think I'd be able to make it, partly because I know I won't do any gardening this year. Then I remembered that while I won't be digging in the ground, I do have a whole deck to adorn. So I still don't know if I'll be able to come, but you all sure have me wanting to be there! If I come, I'll probably bring chocolate chip cookies, or some other kind of food. Since I'm pretty well plantless, I'd be happy with just about anything.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Yay, liz!

I know I can bring you a pot of kolanchoe, dark leaves with orange flowers, & another potted plant that I think is kolanchoe, bright green leaves, flowers as yet an unsolved mystery.

They're easy easy:
I got both of these last year at the Autumn Swap, & they've thrived & grown so that they have to be separated & re-potted.

Cookies are good!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I'll be there too, even if I have to call in sick to work that day. I'm looking for a piece of lava rock about 6"-8" long and wide. Not the junk they use for ground cover, but more like a small boulder. I'm looking for a piece that's black, and not smooth like a created stone, but more like a piece that was chipped off of a real lava floe. If anyone has one or two of those, name your trade. Cheryl

RE: Hey Dorothy / Kristi.

Dorothy - How about posting your ''wish list''. That way, we can see what you are needing. I have been dividing, transplanting, moving plants for sev. days now. I would be very happy, to bring you some more plants. So far, I have the big pot of perennials. Also, my grandson was over the other day & he reminded me ''we should plant some seeds''.
Well, with a driven 4-year old , you all know what happened. We planted l-o-t-s of sev. easy to grow never-fail
my ''old reliables''annuals. We even scattered some, in the big perennial pots! He said, you want them to be full Nana, remember! I am always saying the pots look better with plants spilling out the sides. So, can we see your list?
Kristi - I told dh , he was gonna miss out. Yes, I will take a tomato plant. Thank you.

 o
RE: Kay -where did you go?

Kay - Are you going to post a list? I think ,I got some very nice plants from you last time & you took several plants, no one wanted. Will you let us know? thanks -tina_2

 o
RE: Vines ?

Hi all. I am setting up 2-arches, need some pretty flowering vines for them. Anybody have any, besides morning glory. It never fails , every year I find sev, coming up in diff. locations ( I do love them, just not all over the place). So, I don't need those. Let me know. thanks-tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Since I couldn't bear to chop up sprouting garlic...

I now have about 18 little pots of garlic.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I don't HAVE a list, not really.
We live on about 2.5 acres of mostly trees - really tall post oaks and a very firm clay soil.

There are a couple of garden areas but mostly what we are looking for is ground covers (I hate bare dirt!)

Changed one of the small ponds to a bog - so bog plants are good.

understory trees :-)

low maintenance TX natives

I'd love to have a climbing/rambling, fragrant, disease resistant rose that will grow/bloom in partial sun! :-) dream on, right?

A very large red (I think) oak will have to come down this summer, its bark is falling off as well as some limbs. The only way this is somewhat bearable (yes, I'm a tree hugger) is that it will open some garden space to grow tomatoes!

I have things that flowering vines could grow on - again, partial sun/shade.

We like interesting, different stuff or is attractive to hummers or other birds but not deer

I'm a real plunker too - so surprise me - I'll find some place for it!!

Oh!! I know! since we are so new here, I haven't a good compost pile. So tell me where I can get some good composted manure, and we'll bring the truck!

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hey ya'll getting ahead of me LOL.
You all have been busy, here I've been trying to get my yard / gardens cleaned up.
I am going to plant grape tomatoes may have two for trade and maybe some HOT peppers too. Don't know what else I'll be bring. I do have some bog plants from last fall that I'm thinking of giving up.
Kristi, You will love the blue mist flower shrub, I don't know how big it gets, not knowing what Sylvia had given me I planted it in a pot and was sorry I did once it flowered and got bushy. Now I have them planted up by the back of the house and they are growing all over the area so I'm looking forward to it filling in that empty space :) yeah.

 o
RE; Dorothy , Mikeand Barb, Sylvia.

Okay Dorothy - You seem to be open to any type plant. So, I am gonna let you have what I think you will enjoy!
You know they sell composted manure at Walmart, cheaper than home depot. I know, cause I get mine there.
Anyway, I know you will enjoy all the plants you receive!

MikeandBarb - Please save me a tomato plant & a pepper
plant. I don't know what you need so, I hope I have some plants you like.
Sylvia - I need some of that garlic! Please.
Thanks - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dorothy, all you have to do is look for horses in your area & drop by whenever you see human beings.

They'll probly give you as much as you can use:

My neighbor used to take it out of the stalls & spread it in the pasture that was lying fallow, & the pasture would produce lush green grass the next season.

but the horses wouldn't graze on it until the season after that.

So she would have to age it & compost it first, & it was easier to give it away.

(This way you don't have to use your gasoline-hauling weight reduces mileage-to carry it home.)

If you absolutely cannot find such a person/place, & if you would return home by going east on I-20 to or past Dallas, let me know, & I'll check with her before the swap.

Come to think of it, I need groundcovers as well, horseherb in particular; also herbs of all sorts. But I don't know for sure that I'll be able to come. I have some health issues and today reminded me that I don't always have the energy to leave the house.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I hope to make this one.. I chickened out before seeing it is sooo close to the road I hate.. but I just might make it...

Spring is here and I need a plant fix - plus I would love to meet some of you all.

Mitch (very unsure what in the world I am going to be bringing yet... I am a native nut and they do not always let you know early when there are extras to share. )

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7! 2

sylvia, I love kolanchoes!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Liz, I have you down for 2 kinds of kolanchoes, & I have some vinca or vinca-ish stuff that's a wonderful shade or part-shade ground cover.
Some of it's green & some is variegated.

&, if it hasn't been strangled by bermuda, I have some full-sun stuff that I think is something-or-other Jasmine. Asian Jasmine? small shiny dark green leaves, you see it everywhere.

I hope you can come.

Even if you come for just a little while, & take care to let the rest of us do the lifting & hauling, I think you'll have fun.

Mitch, I know what you mean about a "plant fix"!
Just go out into your yard/garden blindfolded, stick the garden fork into the ground, & dig up whatever's right there.

(Mitch has a sort-of East Texas country/Bohemian/found art/cottage garden: he has everything!)

& do not let the road deter you:
Come on over & *dominate* that road!

I've been potting up some of the mystery/backhoe irises, plus a little bit of liriope, some Kwanzo daylilies, & a bit of the Artemesia Oriental Limelight.

 o
Re: Ft Worth Spring Swap

Anyone interested in Mexican Primrose ("buttercup")?

& Moses in the Boat (Wandering Jew), I think I have 3 kinds:
green, green with purple edges, & purple.
biggish groundcover, full sun, dies back in winter.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Tina_2 I'll put a tomato and pepper plant aside for you.
Last night I planted some summer sun sundrop seeds hoping they will grow. These are great plants, nice and big yellow flowers if they do well and can promise you'll love them. They are drought tough. So crossing my fingers they do well.
Kristi I have or had one next to the henry duelberg and they look great together.
I don't know how long they last mine came back two years in a row but I have not seen new growth yet.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

IF all goes well:
already have potted (sorry, can't guarantee pre-trades)
1 shasta daisy, 2 coreopsis; some blue mist flower,
some bearded iris (Lightbeam?), some nandina- domistica about 2 to 2.5 ft tall.
ambersas, with luck, I will have a S M A LL New Dawn climbing rose-- beauuutiful and shade tolerant. Look it up on helpmefind/roses.
I F I can't get there and someone is coming down I 35 from Denton area, I'd gladly send my trades with you. I live about 3 miles south of Cabella's off Golden Triangle.

p.s don't use the e-mail listed here. It's changed

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Welcome, danna!

I'll be happy to bring you some kwanzo daylilies (the old orange kind that you cannot kill), some variegated Wandering Jew, & some mystery/backhoe iris (see my post above) in return for a tropical milkweed & some pots.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hi everyone, can't believe how out of shape I am. Just one weekend of pulling weeds and I'm out for a day. Well, I don't have alot of plant yet cause I'm still waiting for my seeds to sprout. :-( I guess I started them too late so I haven't seen any sprouts yet. Anyways, I have these so far that I know I will bring.

Haves:
2 tomato cages
chives
1 rosemary
2 dwarf peach tree seedling
golden bamboo
purple leaf perilla
Maybe some others seedlings if they make it in time

Wants:
blue carpet sedum
any japanese maple cutting
lotus seeds
Anything else that I may find eyecatching at the swap :-)

Sylvia, I would love to have some of the garlic and mystery iris if you still have some left. Please let me know if there is something you would like from me.

Thanks!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

(Mitch has a sort-of East Texas country/Bohemian/found art/cottage garden: he has everything!)

Love it ! Love it ! Love it! People keep asking what type of garden is it -- and I have no idea - just love the way you put it there. I know I will have cuttings - I just love doing cuttings! (Need to start some more too ... next on list... )

By the way Sylvia - I was in Gun Barrel City this morning and wow there are some great gardens over there... and I have a few rose cuttings... plus I had to have a slash pine, water oak, and western cottonwood... oh and dug a witchhazel up... I was on the look for Iris.. came back with trees - where I am I going to plant more trees here?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

got you down for garlic & mystery/backhoe irises, kay!

Are the peach trees early-bearing?

(I can't get peaches from mine here, because by August, it's been so dry for so long that the fruit doesn't mature.)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Hi Dannab, I'd love to have a Boston fern and tropical milkweeds.
I may have the tropical salvia the pink one, I'll have to check and get back to you on it.
I have two small starts of both the variegated purple/green wandering jew

I see your wanting hummer flowering plant. May I interest you in a Henry Duelbreg, it is very drought tolerant once established. I also have started summer sun sundrop seeds this week so by the swap I should have them going good.

Weldon.....Email me I think I live close by you and I can take in your trades..Make a list of what you'd like to trade for. Jetman1979@aol.com

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Weldon - many thanks for potential rose. Most people think I'm crazy even asking for a disease resistant, fragrant, hardy, rose that will grow in partial shade!!

Barb-- I looked up the Henry Duelberg and I would love one! I miss typed in my listing red salvia is the one I don't want.....love anything purple and pink!! What is a summer sundrop?
I will save a boston fern and milkweeds for you!

Sylvia--Thanks, I will save milkweed for you, any particular size pots you want? Finally my DH will stop fussing about the pots stacked behind the greenhouse! I just hate to throw anything away!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia, I really don't eat the fruit from mines. I mostly grow it for the flowers as an ornamental tree. It has beautiful deep red leaves after the wonderfull blooms of light pink flowers. It's great if you want a bonsai with tiny fruits. It's blooming right now. Let's see if I can get a pic for you.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Thank you Dannab1, I have you down for the Henry Duelberg and I'll look around for anything I have that is pink or purple.
I do have some vinca that is blooming right now it has purple flowers.

Walking around and just realized I have access to acres of native east texas yellow jasmine and pine saplings at my Mom's if anybody wants some. And I have coral honeysuckle I pull up and throw away if anyone wants that! Funny how we get used to something and until we see a wish list don't realize others don't have it!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dannab, I have been looking for coral honeysuckle can you put my name on that one purty please.
Oh I forgot to tell you about the summer sun sundrop, it is a tall bush like plant 3 feet tall with yellow daisy like flowers the flowers last for a good month or better before needing dead headed.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

danna (& everybody)-
Any & all pots appreciated!

& if you have any extra coral honeysuckle, I'd love that:
I have a honeysuckle, but it never has spread, & I'm not gifted with cuttings, & I have about a zillion feet of ugly fence that could use some help.

Are your pine saplings in acid or alkalai soil?

I love pine trees, but so many of them absolutely won't grow here; even our water is alkaline!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Is it April yet? The excitement is mounting. Can't wait to see/meet everyone.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

seamommy, I have a couple of chunks of lava stone, bigger than you're talking about, about 12".

I'd like a date with George Clooney.

(your words: "name your trade...)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I would love some of the Jasmine, Pine sapplings, and honeysuckle ..

I will find you something here - what are you looking for?

Sylvia - you know there is always room for a few found Iris here :-)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

After reading the thread on Clematis, I want to add that to my wish list! There were pictures of Texas Sweet Autumn clematis that were absolutely stunning, and they said it self-seeds freely. Anybody have any seeds?

IS IT APRIL YET???

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia --I will bring you lots of coral honeysuckle, have no idea about acid or alkaline on the pines but will dig you some up if you want to risk it! I would love some of your Artemesia Oriental Limelight and chocolate mint if you still have some.

Barb--got you down for coral honeysuckle, would love some summer sun spot.
Mitch?(daylily79)-got you down for Jasmine, Pine saplings, and honeysuckle. I love natives best of all so surprise me with something that blooms abundantly or is varigated! I am creating a butterfly/hummingbird habitat. From the descriptions of your garden I bet I will be happy with anything you have!

Anybody need white honeysuckle? Mom has lots coming up so will get some of it this weekend also.

I am getting really excited about this! can't wait to put faces to your names!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Wandering around here I realized we have beauty berry bushes, small ones, about knee high. Anyone interested?

I also have watercress that is exploding out of the 1/2 half barrel filter for the small pond. It needs some thinning so if you have a pond, it loves the running water from a filter.

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Well I am so far behind with all the posts. I will be getting my list of things I'll have together later today. I've got a job interview this afternoon so have been trying to get myself ready for it :O)

Dorothy I would love to get a beauty berry bush if you have an extra one. Hopefully I will have something on my list that you'd like.

I am sooooo very ready for April.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dorothy, I would love a beauty berry bush and my pond could use some watercress. What would you like, or can I just ply you with food. By the way everyone I am still planning on bringing a grill and cooking hot dogs for everyone. Will also bring the necessary condiments, chips, cold drinks and water. I know you can't please everyone with the drinks but I was thing either regular coke and diet coke or regular pepsi and diet pepsi, along with bottled water. Any preference on the sodas?

sylvia, you know what I shouldn't say that it's a bonsai, b/c my tree is actually about 3 ft tall. The fruit itself is about the size of a dollar coin. I have been playing with getting the pics on here. so let's try this and see if it works this time.

Barefoot, I'd be pleased to bring the chips. I will bring any and all kinds and can do a few dips to go with them. Thanks for taking care of lunch, that's a lot to take on. LOL, I don't think you'll have much trouble attracting swappers with their hands full of offerings!

Maybe someone else can handle the paper goods? Napkins, plates, oh and I guess, if necessary, plastic forks etc?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Mitch, I'll probably drop off some mystery/found/backhoe iris for you before the swap;
they're sitting in boxes, & they'll be happier in the ground!

danna, yes, I'd like to try some pines.

& I'll take all the coral honeysuckle you can spare, & white honeysuckle too!

(I have miles of homely "dog fence" to cover.)

I have you down for Oriental Limelight & chocolate mint (you'll love it, it smells *just* like a York's Peppermnt Patty!)

Dorothy, if you still have a beautyberry, I'd love to have one, been wanting one forever!

Kay, those dwarf peach trees are gorgeous!
I'd love to have seedlings!

but...
all I have down for you is garlic & mystery/found/backhoe iris.

Please check my list & let me know if there are other things that I can bring you.

& everybody else, ditto.

I'll be happy to bring some of everything, as long as I know how much & for whom!

Come onnnnn, April!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dannab, how much chocolate mint you want I have some too if you want more. There is another mint that Sylvia gave me last spring spearmint or something but it blooms pretty purple flowers in the fall.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia, got you down for pines and lots of honeysuckle. If you have any of the variegated vinca left I would like some of, just discovered my Husband likes it when we saw some blooming today!

Barb, I'll take some of your chocolate mint also! I bet my kids would love it in the science center at school (kinder teacher, gotta drag all that cool stuff to work you know!!) I would love some of the mint that blooms purple also.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

danna, I put your name on some variegated vinca.

Sylvia, I will put you down for the peach tree seedlings. I would also like to try these if you still have some available- artemesia oriental limelight, green wondering jew, mauve 4 o'clock. please.

Dannab1, would you have some yellow jasimne and coral or white honeysuckles still available for me to try? Please let me know if there is something of mines that you would be interested in.

Remuda1, do you still have the jamaica yellow brug available? I had a cutting from Carrie last year, but it didn't make it so I would like to have it replaced. Is there anything that I can trade for it?

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Okay folks, after 6 lovely hours in the woods with my Mom I have a SUV full of pine saplings, native honeysuckle and jasmine. What a great day to be outside! It was so fun spending the day in the dirt with my Mom. One of the days I will have to look back on. I am so fortunate to finally live close to her and get to spend time together!! I never appreciated her gardening and how much work it was until I got "addicted" it's fun to share her hobby with her and learn all her tricks before she is too old to be able to garden any more. WHERE do the years go?

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have had the glass of wine with the muscle relaxers.......getting a little sentimental here!

Tina- have you down for a fern.....do you have a perennial pot with creeping phlox and iris? If not I would love some of the iris, I have purple but they aren't scented.

Kay- I have you down for all three. Do you still have the rosemary? If not I'll just check out what you bring, I have plenty!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

kay, I've added those things to your name.

danna, your day sounds wonderful!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Kay, the brug is still available. What do you have left?? LOL, I'm finding it a bit difficult to keep up!!

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I don't have anything to swap this year as I am just getting started. I would love to find 10-12 honeysuckle vines to plant if, anyone has extra. Please let me know. Thanks Minijersey

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Native lovers: I do have four nerve daisies and native gayfeather. The four nerves grow all over our twenty acres. They are definitely: Drought tolerant, hardy and EVERGREEN, YEAR ROUND bloomers (sporadically in winter). We have both deer and rabbits, nothing eats these, including horses :). Low mound of short, narrow, strap-like evergreen foliage. Pretty yellow daisy shaped flowers atop long (probably up to 12 inches), graceful stems.

The gayfeather grows wild here as well and is every bit as tough as the daisies. Tall (probably up to 2 feet), great for a nice verticle spike of light purple/lavender color. Grows straight up with foliage that is similar to rosemary. Will die to the ground in winter and return right about now with more stems than last year. The butterflies love them.

I'm only going to dig the gayfeather and daisies if somebody wants them. I don't want to have any extras just sitting in pots around here :). I moved some of the daisies to my flower beds a month and a half ago and they are doing great.

I am also going to divide an oxe-eye daisy today so don't know yet how many I'll have. This is from one that I got from Sylvia last fall and it is THRIVING, LOL. I love the flowers on this one and they last a good while. I think it would make a great cut flower too. Sylvia might be able to tell us. It's not blooming, but is putting on vigorous new growth. Sylvia, do you recall the bloom time on this one?

Tina, I am bringing you a surprise pepper. LOL, I think you'll love it. I didn't think I would have an extra, but I am already scratching my chin trying to find room for everything in my beds. Here's a clue: This pepper is "R" rated!!! Anyone care to guess?

Here's what I have for everyone so far:

Tina: 2 ferns, 1 turk's cap, a tomato and a pepper
Dorothy: 2 turk's cap
BoBerrin: 1 jalapeno, 1 bell pepper
Barefoot: 1 tomato, 1 turks cap
Sylvia: 1 tomato, 1 fern, 1 gayfeather

Waiting to hear from Kay on the brug...

The tomatoes I am bringing are 4 different varieties of heirloom and one cherry (Sweet Baby Girl). Would it be okay if you all just picked what variety you want when we are there or would you rather I list the varieties here?

I have left:
1 heirloom tomato
1 cherry tomato
2 Turk's Cap

The others are pretty common, but I'll be happy to dig for anyone who wants them:

Variegated vinca major (purple flowers)
Liriope (purple flower spike)
Purple bearded Iris (old variety)

Sylvia, feel like digging some crinium? LOL, this is madness, I just can't STOP!!

Kristi

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I was thinking the only daisy I had was Shasta.
can't remember when it blooms, seems like early summer.
It makes a beautiful dark green mound with those cheery flowers above.

kristi, sure, I'll put your name on a mauve crinum.

(I have you down now for blue mist flower & mauve crinum.)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I've been resurrecting a couple of beds here so I can try new things. Love the idea of more natives that take care of themselves, so yes, would love some gay feather and even the 4 nerve daisy. Don't you wonder sometimes how these things get named?

Dorothy

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia, thanks alot. I hope I can get the 4 oclock to grow this time.

Dannab1, I still have the rosemary, so I will put you down for that.

Remuda1, I think I may have one pink and one orange brug to bring. Both well rooted & about two feet tall. Would you be interested in another brug?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

minijersey, I cannot dig up the honey suckle (yellow / white) but if you wish to come dig it up your welcome to it. It's not in my yard or any else's yard it's at the back behind my fence that is next to the freeway over the hill. and I don't want it.
If it doesn't get dug up I'm thinking if putting out salt to kill it. Bring your on pots or whatever you want to take it home in.
Email me jetman1979@aol.com.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Sylvia, I can probably use that big a piece, might have to break it, but it should work.

I'll see what I can do about George Clooney, but in the mean time I have a neighbor who is single. He likes to garden, and he likes antiques. Remember Mel Gibson in Braveheart? He doesn't look like Mel Gibson, he looks kinda like that other guy in the movie, that big guy with the red hair, Hamish.

Oh, heck, how about a rose or something? I have a few extras. Cheryl

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Oops Sylvia, and I had been telling all that it was oxe-eye. Silly me :). Also I think you had said you would bring me a Well Endowed Iris. The post is dated March 7. If you still have enough, I'd love to have it. If not, just give me your address! Snort ;). Thank you for the crinium.

Kay, if you know which brug is more fragrant I'll take that one. If not, let's go for pink :). I'll put you down for the Jamaica Yellow.

Cheryl, could you post a have/want list for us?

Kristi

 o

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Cheryl, a rose would definitely make me happy.

Kristi, you're right, I've added Well-Endowed to my list for you.

Mitch, I love goldenrod;
please look at my list & see if there's anything there you'd like
(or I can drop off another box of mystery/backhoe iris!)

Kristi I would love some of the gayfeather liatris and four nerve daisy. Can I save you anything?

Thanks Mitch! I love surprises!

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

"Kristi I would love some of the gayfeather liatris and four nerve daisy. Can I save you anything?"

Danna, could you tell me more about the jasmine? Is it a flowering kind or kinda like asian jasmine? Did it seem like it might be invasive? Full sun or shade? Shrubby or viney?

Of course, the wine and muscle relaxers are tempting too ;). But we should save that for another day! I've got you down for gayfeather and four nerve daisies.

Thanks,
Kristi

Venessa

Venessa, I would be interested in your fall aster and louisiana iris. Please let me know if I have anything you are interested in?

Thanks,

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Warning--This paragraph is rated "N" for "Nasty". Do not read if you're easily offended. ;-)

Kristi, I'm a pretty spiritual person and I try hard to keep my thoughts pure, but the "R" rated pepper challenge you gave us got me curious and I went looking for what in the world you could be talking about. Well, I found it!

Who knew there was actually a pepper like that?! I think the sentence that did me in was, and I quote, "It ends in a rounded dome, which is inset inside the main sheath of the chile." Did they have to put it that way? And then post *pictures* to boot? I feel so...so *violated*.

Are these actually edible? If you happen to come across an extra seed, I think these would be fun to grow. It would certainly get a rise out of the neighbors!

For those who would care to view the pictures and information about the offending vegetables, click the link below and then select the letter "P" on the left of the screen. From there, you'll be able to scroll down to the Pene Pepper, the P#nis Pepper and the Peter Pepper. (My apologies in advance.)

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Remuda1, the orange one bloomed last year with only a few blooms since it was my first year. The pink one I had gotten from Barb and it was too big to bring inside so I made little ones out of them. It hasn't bloom yet. so Sorry, I couldn't tell you which one is more fragrant. I will go ahead and put your name on the pink one.

Vanessa, I love roses. I had gotten a whole bunch of cuttings from Sylvia last fall and I was only able to root 6 of them. So I'm still learning. Maybe you can give me some pointer at the swap. Anyways, I am really interested in the Green Rose, Dr. Eckner and your mini red stripe one. Sorry, am I being too greedy already? :-) It's this weather I think: "Spring" :-)) This is what I still have left so if you are interested, please let me know: rooted orange brug, chives, spearmint, tomato cages, golden bamboo, purple leaf perilla, and I will probably have some water plants too.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Krisit, I've got you down for the aster and iris. I will go through this thread later to find your list :) I can't believe how long it's gotten and there are still 3 weeks before the swap.

Kay, I've got you down for the roses and maybe I can talk you into taking a few others at the swap :O) I'd love the brug, perilla and bamboo.

Thanks

 o
RE: Tomato cages, plastic border.

Hey, is anyone interested in these items? If not, they stay home. thanks - tina_2

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Bo, LOL I wondered if anyone would take the time to research this one! Glad you did though :). Yes, the pepper is edible....but VERY HOT. Would need to use sparingly in recipes. I only got a few seeds from a friend, but I will bring you some since I will be able to harvest my own this year. And as for: "My apologies in advance", say three Hail Maries and three Our Fathers and you shall be forgiven ;).

Venessa, thank you for the Iris and Asters. Here's an "off the top of my head" on what I've got left:
1 Cherry Tomato Sweet Baby Girl
1 Heirloom Tomato
1 Turk's Cap
If you would like the 4 nerve daisy or the gayfeather, I can dig for you :).

Kristi

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

How funny!

My Aunt Lillie used to grow those things.
She called 'em "little boy peppers".

Kay, you only managed to root 6???
*SIX*???

That's a bunch!

Wonder if we could get Venessa, & Weldon if he can make it, to offer a Rose Rooting class/workshop?

Tell us what we need to bring.

all in favor?

venessa?

weldon?

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Venessa, I got you down for those plants. Thanks.

Sylvia, I did have six different ones. I thought it was totally disappointing. I felt really bad cause you had given me so many and I only rooted six. The thorns were killer on some of them. I had so many bandages, it wasn't even funny. I was really happy with the results though. I had two of the thornless varieties and four with thorn that rooted. Yeah, I'm all for the rose rooting class/workshop :-)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Venessa - I would kill, sell, or trade, anything for some of your roses....

green rose, Puerto rico, betty prior, lafter, red knockout, charlotte, cornelia, and archduke charles

What can I get you - trade for you, get you just about anything.... I am just putting in a large rose area and was going to order these... tell me what you would like or what I can get you and I will have it ready. (I do try to keep a few special things here just for this type of thing so give me some ideas and I will go from there)

Mitch

I will have one cutting of Morning Glory bush and several cutings of my Brug. Would anyone be interested in those?

I am going to have bitoned purple Iris and white Iris I have loads of named Daylilies if there is anyone interested in those - I will have to see what is up but I would give you all I have of each one. Sooo many good ones just not the room for them I once had. I also have 20 some no name Daylilies that I could get out there too. Just need to know if these are worth digging.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Kristi, I'd love some four nerve daisy and gayfeather.

Mitch, I've got you down for the roses. Red knockout is tiny but has been rooted for over a year so it just needs some love. They should all take off once planted. I would to hear about your daylilies, either here are you can email me privately. venessap1@hotmail.com

Kristi-The jasmine is the native carolina jasmine you see blooming now. Beautiful yellow blooms, evergreen vine, my leaves turned a greenish purple, Mom's are in heavy woods so didn't get the frost I think and stayed green. Can be invasive, hers is in woods that haven't been touched for years til they moved in and it is up in the trees. I have had it on my windmill and it is easily trimmed back and doesn't grow 10 ft a day like my trumpet vine did! Sorry after digging at Mom's all day Sat. and then planting here all day Sunday, the muscle relaxers are in short supply! I AM IN PAIN TODAY!

Mitch-- I would love some of your daylilies. I don't have any except the ones Sylvia is bringing me! I don't mind if they are unnamed, since I am just starting with them I will take anything. (And just call them pretty girls!!)

Venessa -- I have a small box of quilting books from my Mom that I was going to put on ebay. I would love a repeat blooming rose bush (I think that is the term for an all summer bloomer) or one that is two toned. I don't know all the names you put down! Although from what I just wrote you should suggest one I'm not likely to kill!! I will email you with the names of the books I have tomorrow, you are welcome to them all. I would rather someone who wanted them have them!!

Here is a link that might be useful: east texas carolina jasmine

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Mitch, I'd love to hear about your named daylilies as well. If you email Venessa, could you copy to me at remuda1@aol.com?

Venessa, I have you down for the 4 nerves and gayfeather.

Danna, yes please on the jasmine :).

Kay, thank you for reserving the pink brug :).

Kristi

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I've seen that beautiful plant also labeled
"Carolina Jessamine".

Why do they make things obscure?

I have one that's taken over an arbor, it's just gorgeous, I love it.

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Danna, most of the roses I have are repeat although I don't think I have any two tone colors so if you give me an idea of what color you would like I can pick something out for you.

I forgot to say that I would be willing to bring my stuff to do a rooting demonstration if there is interest. It's fun and easy. In the spring I usually have a 99% success rate. Just let me know and I will dig my beginner set up out of the garage for show and tell :O)

 o
RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

I'm all for the rooting demo! I've never been able to root *anything* despite trying everything--rooting hormone powders, old wives' tales, farmer's almanac tricks, tribal rooting dances beneath a full moon, you name it. I got nothin' but dead sticks.

Mitch, do you have any Stella D'Oro daylilies? Those have always been my favorites; they bloomed their heads off back in Virginia. Do they survive in Texas? Do I have anything you'd want in trade for them? I'd take any kind you've got, but Stella D'Oro and anything compact with pink or red are my favorites.

I've ordered a bunch of trailing rosemary (Rosemary Prostratus) from my local garden center to plant on my rocky bank. I'm hoping this order comes in before the swap so I might have some of that to trade, if anybody is interested. I'll post a link with a picture of it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Rosemary Prostratus (Second Picture of Rosemary on this page)

RE: WANTED: Ft Worth Spring Swap April 7!

Dannab, If you have any native carolina jasmine I would like some please.
My son is wanting to start gardening his front yard, I'm not sure what he'd like to have but if he comes over and digs up some plants from my garden I'm going to let him trade for thing's he'd like.
Daylily79, I would love some daylilies I have stella O'Oro and a few other ones forgot the names, so I would like any with other colors beside red or yellow, I don't know what I have to trade that you might like......mmmmmmm maybe I can give you Kristi Pepper trees :)For real I have lots of salvias, Red, Blue, Black/Blue, Bog salvia.
Oh, I do have some Kwanzo daylilies if you like.
