Bluebonnets from seed

We planted Bluebonnet seeds last fall for the first time and are excited to see them bloom:

Here's the view from the deck:

Still a lot of work to do, but this area will always be mostly wildflowers and natives.

These other photos were taken last year along FM 1604 in San Antonio. I don't think the show will be as good this year.

How fun! It is exciting to see them come up. I have a couple in the front and a couple in the back.

I am in the Houston area this week. There were very few when I came over this past Sunday. It will be interesting to check for a difference going home.

Your slide show is gorgeous. There's nothing prettier than a field of bluebonnets. It nice that you're getting them started in your yard.

I need to get some seed and throw them in the field across the street and see it they will come up and keep returning.

I have blue bonnets in my hellstrip which is now pretty much complete. I will post a picture as soon as the buds open up.
Your blue bonnets are really pretty.

That's pretty, Shirley. I hope they reseed for you, and that your backyard will look like the beautiful pictures you posted of the fields, in a few years. How nice that will be, to know you started them yourself.

Kathy, hope you have time to go home on Hwy 290 and see the beautiful Bluebonnets in Chappell Hill. Just stunning.

We won't leave reseeding to chance yet because the seeds can remain dormant for years. We scuffed them with bricks, soaked overnight and then planted them back in October right before we had three days of rain in a week. As soon as the sun came out, the sprouts were up and we've been waiting since then. We'll do that the next few years.

The field in the slide show is the last of the undeveloped commercial land in our neighborhood so it will probably be gone soon. I'm so glad we got good pictures when we had the chance.

I've also collected seeds from many of the flowers back there to bring into the yard. To do anything else with that spot would require hauling several truckloads of dirt around the house by wheelbarrow only to see it wash into the creek when it rains, so wildflower meadow is the logical choice.
