When I was very small, in McAllen, TX, many "little old ladies" used tires for planters. Back then it was considered tacky. Fifty years ago I doubt the word recycle was even coined. So much landfill damage.
That reminds me. For the polio drive the firemen would set a pyre of tires on fire. When people drove out to see what the huge fire was they had a choice of a traffic ticket or they could donate that money to the March of Dimes.

That'll work! What a great way to recycle. I love how you've stacked the two tires and I love the color you chose.

I've been intrigued with tire planters ever since I saw this one in Cactus Marty's garden on the Herb Society's 2012 Garden Tour.

roselee, I love that one. It looks bigger than a normal sized tire.
Growing up in N. Georgia, my mama had the tulip shaped turned inside out tire planters.

That's 'May Night' salvia and its pet bee in front. I just planted a baby Lindheimer Senna (from this year's Texas Discovery Gardens plant sale) in it. The blue doesn't provide much contrast with the salvia, but it should pop when the senna is in bloom.

I like Lindheimer Senna. I bought one at Natives of Texas about 18 mos. ago, but it seems to have died over winter I guess. I had it in a pot and it didn't seem to like that, so I planted it in fall and it's disappeared.

Using the truck tire tread as a planter is interesting. But, cutting tires can be a tough job if you don't have the right tools.

It makes my shoulders hurt just thinking of the sawzall grabbing ahold of that braided metal embedded in the tire. I found two that hd peeled off the tire just right on Southwest parkway in Austin.
