Help Needed Around Pool Area

We just recently purchased a house in Frisco, TX that needs landscape work and first on our list is around our pool. We have a grass area in the yard for our dogs but would like to add some plants/shrubs/small trees along one side of our pool. We are looking for things that will not constantly fall in the pool, are safe for the dogs to walk thru, and add some color to our backyard.

I've attached a picture of the area. Basically, all it is now is an area with small rocks and weeds coming thru the rocks. The plan is to remove all the rocks and start over.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi JKG! I'm going to put a link to your question on the discussions forum because it has a wider readership than here on the gallery.

Some more pictures of the whole area that you are wanting to landscape would be helpful, too. Unfortunately the one picture you provided looks like it landed here upside down so it's a little hard to visualize how far the pool is from the fence.

I think you'll get some helpful suggestions from the good folks on the Texas forum.

My suggestions would include: daylilies, 'hot lips' sage, salvias, shasta daisies, catmint and lambs ear. For evergreens try rosemary and sky pencil holly, and lavender if it grows in your area. I don't think these would litter too much. Include some asters and blue mist shrub for fall color, and some spring bulbs like crocus, iris and daffodils for early spring color.

If you have some shady areas, you may want to try gardenias, hostas, pulmonaria.

I'm sure others will have lots of suggestions. I just tried to think of things that didn't have many falling petals or leaves.

Your suggestions sound perfect! Mix some annuals in there and everyone should be happy.

jkg, What kind of sun does the area get? all day? only morning or only afternoon? That will make a big difference in what you plant there.

Try Pale-leaf Yucca (Yucca pallida). Its leaves are a nice shade of blue-green that will match the water in the pool. Their sharp ends can be cut off if need be. The plant is tolerant of sun to shade and the blackland soils typical of your area.

Thanks for the suggestions. As a follow-up here are some more details on this area...

-This area gets pretty good sunshine during the day and especially the afternoon.
-The approximate total length of the area is about 30 feet
-The depth of the area varies as it conforms to the edge of the pool but is between 3-6 feet all the way around.
