Hey guys, I'm new to this forum. I would like to learn more about keeping plants in the garden. I'm a college student studying biology so I love plants and animals in the garden lol. I want to share with you guys my mom garden. This is only a portion of her garden. We need to cut down on the plants since there is a drought in Texas this year. We just done the patio to so now we are trying to do the landscape for the backyard. Sorry the yard looks dirty to lazy to mow the yard.

This is a very rare plant. I don't know what its call though. It doesn't bloom a lot since it can't stand the cold. The flower resemble peach blooms but yellow.

crape myrtle
Is the dark purple crape myrtle hard to grow? My mom plant only grows about a feet a year. The other crape myrtle grows way faster.

This plant I'm not really sure. It has tiny yellow fruits

This is some kind of cactus I believe. It has thorns but have cluster of flowers. There are a variety of colors. My mom has dark red, pinkish, white, and yellow.

This plant I also am unsure of. It died off a year ago because of the cold. I prune it and it started blooming. I need to put it in a bigger pot as I see at garden center that they can grow pretty large.

This is a Mexican guava plant. Well that what the people call it when they gave it to my mom. We have two of these plants. Only manage to have 4 fruit though. The birds ate most of them.

hibiscus. My mom has a few, but this the only type that seems to have a lot of flowers. The others have abundant leaves but only a few flowers.
Photobucket

desert rose. These plants are so sensitive to watering. We use to have a really big one but the roots got rotted because of to much watering. My uncle have the huge bonsai ones but the roots rotted away to.
Photobucket

orchid tree? This plant blooms in cluster that looks like orchids. I believe there are more than one color. My neighbor has one that is all white. I have one that has pink and white.

redbud and peaches. That dark red flowering one I dont think is a peach tree. It bear fruits but it looks really weird.

Thanks for sharing the pics - they're lovely.

Most of her plants just won't do in my area, but I do recognize a few of your unknowns.
a) purple with yellow berries is duranta, maybe sapphire showers
b) the purple flowering hibiscus might be a rose of sharon
c) the orange-red flowers (just after the peach and redbud) is flowering quince

You and your Mom have a great yard! Love those plumerias!
I love your aquarium. I always wanted to have Discus fish when I had my aqurium but they were just too expensive for me. (I knew I would eventually kill 'em).

Wow! What a wonderful collection of colorful plants. Thanks so much for sharing your Mom's garden with us. I looked at all your pictures several times. Don't worry about cutting the grass. It looks happy!

The aquarium photos are wonderfully lush too. But I know it is very hard to keep them going and the fish healthy. My son used to have several aquariums. He was into collecting cichlids, a very interesting fish.

Are those Discus in the aquarium? I've heard that they are really hard to keep, very delicate! The garden is beautiful and with all of those blooms, who can even notice the grass? ☺

Yes those are discus. They are very sensitive to water changes. Very difficult to take care of. Are any of you guys cutting back on your plants? This is the first drought in Houston for a few years. My mom is cutting back on a lot of plants. Here are some more pictures. The Mexican Guava plant finally bear some fruit.

Yes, I am cutting back the size of the plants so they don't need so much water and have less foliage from which to transpire what little moisture they have and am cutting back on the number of plants as well.

Seems it is better to have a few plants looking fairly good, than a bunch of rag-tag wilted and dying ones.

Happy gardening, however you have to manage it! :-)

The blue flowering plant with the yellow fruit is duranta. The plumeria is georgous! I have tried growing it in a container, but the second year, it didn't make it. I have friends who have plumeria in containers and here in north Texas, we have to bring it inside in the winter, and theirs is growing beautifully. It is nice to be able to leave it in the ground! The palm trees are also very lovely as are all the other plants in her garden. What a wonderful place to visit, kick back and relax in the shade of a palm tree with a tropical drink and drink in the view of the beautiful flowers! MMMM-MMMMMMM!

Thank you for sharing your mothers garden with us I am a big fan of the crown of throns & plumeria plants, what color is her angels trumpet in the last pic on the right side?

The top color is white bottom part is red. Its pink if you dont water it a lot, but I guess its not red but really pink/red when it receive abundant water. The plant is fairly easy to grow. You just make a cutting and put it in the water. I don't know why the yellow/white kind is so much harder to grow. We have try it 3 times, and it died all three times.
