Our youngest grapefruit started producing fruit soon after we planted it, and has continued fruiting since then. We would actually prefer if the tree put more energy into growing than fruiting. Our young Valencia orange and youngest Meyer lemon were hit hard by last year's freeze and did not fruit this year. The property's mature Meyer lemon and bitter oranges consistently fruit without any special treatment. I would take care of a kumquat much like any other plant and ensure it doesn't get too wet.

I'll need to plant it in a bigger pot then roll it in and out of the garage when it freezes.

The tree I have is grafted. I am assuming that unlike a grafted rose, I should NOT plant it deeper than the graft.

I want to succeed. I have a lemon tree that was a cutting given to me about 3 1/2 years ago. It is a good 5 ft tall in its pot with nice green leaves but has never even put out any flowers. I think I may need remedial citrus measures.

Wish out new Horticultural zone included citrus....grins.

You should actually be able to grow it in the ground. If you have a South wall to plant it against, all that much better. I grow Tangerines and Meyer Lemon easily along a South wall and get huge crops. My Kumquat is out in the open and does fine. They are the hardiest of all the citrus. I am way out of the citrus belt. Along I-20 near Shreveport.
All citrus make nice container trees though.

I had no idea! I'm not sure if I dare try it here. The ice storms of most years have been brutal. But it is tempting! I was told it might be possible. Hmmmmm
