Well, don't know much about the American hybrids, but there are a few Chinese chestnuts around here in Nac that do well. Supposedly the other native chestnut species (chinquapin) occurs as far west as Robertson county naturally. I bet it might come down to having the right soil. I've heard coarser soils make it easier for trees to deal with warmer/drier climates than normal but maybe under irrigation that wouldn't be so much a problem. Would be interesting to see how it turns out though.

I plan on ordering some this week, but 30 bucks a pop, I think ill start at 4 seedlings.

American Chestnut grows in the Austin area, historically and the blight is not here.. If one gives them some depth of soil, possibly they will do well a bit west of Austin. I would imagine , if Pecan grows there , you are safe. I did see an old one up on a high valley area that had some bottom soil from the ridges around it.
