Love my trees, BUT)))))

I live north of Dallas: clay soil, not much rain, very alkaline. Fifteen years ago we planted four trees along the west side of our house which has helped a lot with the heat coming in the house there, but pretty much killed the grass. Between my house, the trees and the neighbors fence there is very little direct sun.

My kitchen door opens onto a small patio out there and I would like to make it a pretty area but right now it is just dirt with a couple of patches of St. Augustine that my hubby is trying to establish. Not looking too good for that either. Right now lloking out there I just see my neighbors house, dirt and tree trunks. Are there ANY shrubs, ground covers, flowers that could grow in such a hostile environment?
