I think you'll have a hard time growing them there. I have not grown pawpaws myself, but they are native here in east Texas. In the wild at least, they seem to grow as thickets in shade of other trees and I think they prefer acidic sandy soil. They also have big leaves that would probably get torn up by the wind. But I have also seen cultivated trees that were producing lots of fruit at a size which would be reasonable for a large patio pot, so it could still be possible. I never thought of the wind being a big factor until I started sending east Texas plants down to my parents on the coast where the wind is strong and constant as well. Some of these forest plants just can't handle it.
