The only problem with pruning roses seems to be if there is a freeze following pruning that could cause damage to the new growth. Some just wait until it starts our early spring season to see what damage has been done before pruning in the spring. Roses need to be pruned anyway just to keep them the size and shape you enjoy.

Thank you. I tend not to prune this rose, but she is, indeed, too wide for her space.

I'd opt to just wait.. Feb isn't here yet. :)

Today is a lot cooler than yesterday was up here in N Texas.
another front is on the way.

I try to always prune around Feb. 20 - Mar. 1. I don't have a single dormant rose this year. Wm. R. Smith NEVER goes dor. I still prune and shape for the new year's growth and blooms. That is not a bad time to add some alfalfa pellets (lightly) if you have them.

ah. So it can be okay to prune and shape for the new year even when the rose is not dormant. I will happily wait until the last of February to think about pruning the Duchesse!

The rose shall have alfalfa pellets or other fertilizer then, too.

And Weldon has the most beautiful roses...........I would certainly take his advice.

I just pruned the dickens out of my Martha Gonzales. She was about to topple over with new growth. I'm sure it won't set her back for a second.
