I saw one like the third photo, by the lake where I walk. Wild flowers blooming in January make my heart glad.Sorry don't know their names.

The first is a Cucumber-leaf Sunflower (Helianthus debilis) and the second an Annual Aster (Symphyotrichum subulatum), but I am unsure of the third's identity. I checked a book I have, Wildflowers of Texas, as well as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's website.

Thanks Ty, I've heard that first one named several things and it's nice to get a definite answer.

Annual Aster, it does look like an aster now that I think of it.

I also checked the Wildflower Center website and my book called Texas Wildflowers for the third one and didn't see anything like it at all.

I'll keep searching for that one.

Number 3 is a non-native invasive which is why it's not in the books, Rapistrum rugosum

In Wildflowers of Texas the India Mustard (Brassica juncea) is a dead ringer for that third plant. Because it's an introduced invasive it may have been alternatively identified by different sources. Both Rapistrum rugosum and Brassica juncea are in the mustard family, both are non-native invasive species and both have earned the common name ba$tard cabbage.

I like the three of them eventhoug all of them are invasive. To me, the aster is the worst. I think the helianthus you have is not h. debilis, maybe h. tuberosum? I say that because I think I have it and the one I have grows taller than h. debilis and its leaves are bigger, coarser and "hairier". I have never checked its roots to see if they form a tuber, but I know they go deep and it's difficult to kill the plant when it's established.

The aster and the ba$tard cabbage are invasive but they are seasonal. They disappear when it gets warmer. That also means that they offer some interest when everything else is fading or dormant. They also look better when they are planted in mass.

Thank you Omar, I had thought they looked like good plants for winter interest. Anything that will stand up to construction and bloom in the winter can be a good plant. I haven't found anything to be invasive in my yard yet.
