Best Organic, Sustainable Orchards In Texas?

Hi guys.

I've reached a point where I'm ready to spend some time working on a profitable permaculture / sustainable / organic fruit orchard somewhere in the US, either as an intern or employee. It's my goal to own a small orchard myself, but I need some hands on experience.

My preference is in the South, Southwest, or Westen part of the country (warmer areas).

My criteria is that they make the majority of their income from the production and sale of fresh fruit from trees. They must be a profitable business that supports at least one person full time, not a backyard operation. I want them to be organic at the least, but preferably fairly sustainable in terms of inputs, and it would be amazing if they were doing permaculture.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

Check with your local extension agent and or your master gardener. Or A&M University for help with your request.

This past December I visited a farm in Rio Hondo that I believe meets all of your criteria. It is run by an elderly Buddhist man, and one of his goals it to educate people about sustainable agricultural practices. The farm grows a variety of plants, including Guava, Avocado, Mango, Dragon Fruit, Moringa oleifera, Sugarcane, Passionfruit, and Figs, among others.

I'll be honest, I've been looking and googling for organic farms and gardens in Texas and you have to dig! I'd like to hope the extension agencies would know but I don't have high hopes.

Let us know what works out...I'm interested in buying truly Texas grown products.

There is many meetup sites in different states and cities. that have what you are looking for.
