I LOVE tulips! They are so beautiful. But, sadly they are not worth the effort it takes to keep them blooming.

Here is why
The growers of big blooming hybrind tulips in Holland cut the buds off them for a couple of years. When we see the flower it is spectacular! After yours bloom you'll have green foliage remaining. It needs to take in nutrients from the soil and life from the sun until the foliage turns brown and whiters away. After that, you can dig the bulbs, store them in a cool dry place then refrigerate them for 10-12 weeks and replant after Christmas or early January.

But you will quickly notice that the bulb beneath the foliage has split into 3-5 tiny bulbs. They are not big enough to flower and you will go through all of this for at least 2 years....3 if you want the big flowers you have now.

You may get a flower or two. But probably not unless you have a lot of them. You'll go throught the spring and then dig, store and chill again. Maybe the next year you'll have some tulips.

I plant a LOT of tulips each year and sadly they are compost after the show.

But boy, they are gorgeous!
