I wasnt quite sure if anyone is looking for it or not but I was at Lowes and Burpee has got something called seed starter and its basically coconut fiber or what is called coir. Its an alternative to peat in soil mixes so if your looking for something new...there ya go

Thanks Joe. That's good to know. I've read that coir is an alternative to using peat moss as it serves the same purposes. The good part is that as coconut fiber it is a sustainable product where peat moss is not.

BTW, Lockhill Feed Store in San Antonio has 40 lb sacks of green sand for $8.99. It's an acidifier, less expensive, safer, and much better for the environment than Ironite, which I used to use.

"The presence of heavy metals in Ironite® lead to its banning in Canada, and lawsuits in the United States due to the potential release of heavy metals– notably arsenic and lead."

Here is a link that might be useful: Release of Heavy Metals from Ironite/US EPA

What was the cost vs the cost of peat moss? Did you notice?

I know that a brick (the compressed coir) was like $2.58 or $2.85 (I forget) and it makes 8 quarts once hydrated. Its a renewable resource and doesnt turn hydrophobic like peat does.

Thank you! I'll have to look for it the next time I'm close to a Lowes.
