where to buy clematis in DFW area?

I am looking for "Polish spirit" or "Polish pride" deep purple clematis, last year I bought one in a bag at HD or Lowes and all that was in the bag (besides dirt) was a 1" long dry stick with the diameter of a toothpick! I planted it, but nothing ever came up (surprise).

This year I want a plant that is a little further along to start out with! Any ideas where and when these might be available? I am hoping to let it climb my new pergola along with a yellow lady banks.

Hey, take that "stick" back and get your money back next time!! If you can't find this one, the Jackmani is a pretty color to go with the yellow, much more common so should be easier to find. Be careful of that rose, though, as mine have gotten completely out of hand.

What do you mean by "completely out of hand"? Is it invasive or aggressive/destructive like Wisteria? I planted a two gallon lady banks 2' from the house hoping it would help cover my 10' X 20' pergola and maybe even the "flat roof" part of the house next to it (a badly done porch enclosure that is always too warm in summer)...I don't mind if it gets really big, but I'll dig it up right now if its going to tear things up!!!

Google for the one in Tombstone, Arizona and you will know how large they CAN get. Mine are no where near that size, but have completely covered an eight foot wooden fence, and show no signs of slowing down.

Oh Yikes! Mine is a yellow thorn-less, not white like the Tombstone one but I'm guessing they are equally vigorous? Well now I am torn between the promise of a quick beautiful cover, and the vision of having to take a chainsaw to it in a couple years to keep it from swallowing the house!

You could probably keep it under control if you would prune it regularly ........I have not done that, and so mine are really in need of the chain saw at the moment. I won't do it now until after they bloom, but it MUST be done this year.

One of my all time favorite nurseries is in Dallas, North Haven Gardens. They are located between Forest Lane and Royal Lane and between Hillcrest and Central Expressway
at 7700 Northaven Rd. They have got gobs of plants, and I'm sure Clematis is among them. I used to shop there for begonias because there is a guy there or used to be that was a member of the American Begonia Society, and he grew and propagated some of the most beautiful plants. Not the bedding begonias, but rhizomatous, canes, etc.

They carry tons of herbs, too, or used to. You could probably call then and see when their Clematis will be available.

I have 'Polish Spirit' and it is one of the easiest to grow. It is a viticelli hybrid, and they are very robust plants. You can cut them back almost any time, too, unlike many Clematis.
