Blooms

These bulbs came from a 200+ years old stone house on the Blanco river. I planted them Nov. 07 and this is the first time they have bloomed. They are scented, but not the same scent as the paperwhites we buy today.

This pic is my new fur baby.

She will be 13 weeks on Wed. and weighs almost 3 lbs.
She is a toy fox terrier. Her name is Maeve, pronounced like save. Originally I named her Mimi, but that caused confusion with Bebe.
Of course the other rotten "kids" hate her.

I don't know which looks better--your flowers or Maeve! What a darling puppy. She's a terrier, so she'll be able to hold her own with the other "kids."
Your blooms look like our blooms! We rescued a half-bushel of bulbs from a turn-of-the-century house that was to be demolished, and brought some with us when we moved. They are blooming their heads off now, and have a delightful scent, almost citrusy and lighter than the new paperwhites.

RE: Blooms

Those bulbs look like they may be Avalanche (Seventeen Sisters) or maybe Grand Primo. Beautiful!

Now that puppy - oh my! She is too cute for words!!

Here is a link that might be useful: Avalanche Narcissus

RE: Blooms

Love them both, Kathy, but the puppy more.....LOL> I have two new fur babies as well ......two Yorkies.

RE: Blooms

Thanks, y'all.

Marlin, If you ever discover the name of your bulbs, let me know.

Barking, I checked the link. The cups of the blooms I have are all white. Some look yellow in this pix, but they are not. Thanks for your help, as I would love to know the name.
Carrie, I had my cocker put down Christmas eve day. For me it works better to have a new puppy to help me heal. I know she can't ever replace my Snickers.

I found this info by Jerry Parsons.

Here is a link that might be useful: heirloom narcissus/tazetta

RE: Blooms

I am so sorry to hear that, Kathy. I know how much this hurts.

RE: Blooms

Sweet pictures! Agree about how healing a new puppy can be :-) Love that little Maeve. So glad to know you got her.

 o
RE: Blooms

I love the puppy! So sorry about your loss, though. Like you, a puppy helps the healing and there is nothing quite as funny as a new kid trying to fit in...grins

I agree, they look like tazetta narcissus but why are they blooming already? Mine usually bloom later than others in my garden but the scent is wonderful! Please note that I do not like the scent of paperwhites...so maybe this is it.

You are in another zone. Do you already have daffs in bloom? Mine multiply and literally have people stop and say what is that fragrance???

 o
RE: Blooms

These are the only thing blooming. I am hoping they will multiply. I would love to be able to share with some of my friends.
I don't like the scent of paperwhites. My oldest son gets them to force and my grands have complained about them for years.
I do have one cememtary white iris with a bud, one larkspur showing color on the buds, and one columbine with a bloom stalk showing. Daffs do not return well here.
also I noticed sweet olive showing buds.

RE: Blooms

Beautiful blooms! Daffs probably do not get enough chill period for good growth where you're located. But, those are sure gorgeous!

Love your little newbie! There is a certain period where they have to find their niche with the other children. We rescued a new kitten from the animal shelter for my granddaughter and he has fit in nicely. I wasn't sure he would cuz the other 3 are not very accepting. But, my GD had lost a baby kitten she rescued that was a stray in the neighborhood and named her Violet. She only lasted 5 days, but that didn't matter because she got so attached to her. She patiently tamed her over a couple of months, and we finally decided to bring her indoors after taking her to the vet to be checked out and get her baby shots. Kenna was devastated. We waited about 3 weeks for her to decide she wanted to try aother one. He is a sweetheart and loves her to pieces. Children and animals just "go together", you know?

Congrations on your blooms and your puppy!

Susan

just beautiful... and adorable!

RE: Blooms

So sorry to hear about Snickers. I remember how much we all enjoyed the "dogs wood" photo.

Love the blooms and Maeve is adorable. It would be great to find bulbs that work here in our climate, it's one thing I do miss from colder climates.

RE: Blooms

Rock Oak Deer,
The Southern Bulb Company has a myriad of bulbs that WILL grow here in Texas. In fact, they are in Texas! Check out their website at www.southernbulbs.com and see what's on offer.
I'm a transplant, too, and still have narcissus, daffodils and something that comes from a bulb and is blue, but I don't know what it is (but not grape hyacinth).

RE: Blooms

Carrie, I forgot to ask do you still have the other two yorkies?
Are you new ones rescues? Lucky pups!

My neighbor's son-in-law recently found a stray yorkie near his job in Houston. She was so thin and such a mess. He rescued her and she now lives with my neighbor's mother. Which has made all the difference in that widow's life.

Re: Maeve. She had her final shots today. She weighed 3 lbs...with her sweater on. lol.
He said she can be spayed any time now. eeek.
I think I'll wait until she's a bit bigger.

 o
RE: Blooms

Maeve is a darling and that sweater is just so cute! I am so soory to hear about Snickers.

I love your narcissus too!

Pam

RE: Blooms

Kathy, we lost our last two this past May within three weeks of each other. These are rescues and both older .. most people want younger dogs. They were owner surrendered due to circumstances out of their control. They are wonderful little girls, and we are enjoying them very much. Their unconditional love can make a difference in anyone's life.

 o
RE: Blooms

Carrie, that's horrible to lose them so close together. I am so sorry.
Good for you to take older dogs.

RE: Blooms

Beautiful flowers!

I can see yellow on one daffodil here!

I'm sorry for the losses of pets, but I'm glad y'all have new lovies.

 o
RE: Blooms

Well, if it ever gets dry enough for me to do so, I will see if I have any daffs blooming or if the bulbs have rotted.

Wow, you all have blooms/buds already! (Makes me worry what all I lost that I wasn't worried about!)

My Golden Dawn (Narcissus tazetta) have buds on them. The Texas Star jonquils have greenery up, but no buds. It is their first season.

The dianthus are starting to bloom their hearts out. I remember them being absolutely beautiful in late February last year covered in yellow sulfur butterflies. I'm waiting for a dry/warm spell to really move things around in the back yard. Not many signs of life. I'm assuming I provided too much late summer shade for my Texas Gold Columbine since I don't see any growth yet.

My compost is all in place, so the new beds are ready for action. Of course the veggie beds aren't done yet. We've decided to add stone borders since we have stone left over from our arbor project.

We'll see!

Sure love seeing your blooms and furry friend. Maeve's precious!
