Doyle Thornless Blackberries - Feedback wanted

| Hello
I live in San Marcos (Between Austin and San Antonio) and am thinking of growing the Doyle blackberry. I plan to put it in a homemade 55 gallon earthbox type of setup.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried growing the plant around here and if so what was your results? What kind of soil did you use? Fertilizer regimen?
I appreciate your help.

Keith; I tried the Doyle in my backyard (Spring, Tx.) but was not impressed with the results. I had better luck with the Arapaho Blackberry. (grown in the same place the Doyles failed.) Most blackberries are a cinch to grow in most of east/central Texas, but the Doyle did poorly, at best for me. Jerry |

| Jerry Out of curiosity do you still have the Doyle? How long have you/did you have it? Most places are saying around 3 years before it becomes really fruitful. I must admit I got a little impatient and ordered one already. Only one though. I am really hoping that having it in that earthbox type of setup makes a difference. Keith |

| I grow the varieties recommended by Texas A&M, which are primarily the Arkansas University varieties. I am growing a hedge of 16 plants Navaho, Ouachita, and Apache. They have been very vigorous plants and basically trouble-free. I will getting my first harvest this year. I ordered my plants from Stark Brothers. There was a farm in Wyle, TX that was an exclusive Doyle blackberry farm, not sure if they are still around. From what I read though the fruit quality of other thornless are superior to Doyle. Doyle does produce a LOT of fruit. So, up to you I guess. Hope this helps. |

Keith; I gave up on the Doyle after a couple years, couldn't get any serious fruitset from them. Planted the Arapaho's in the same place, and they did well for several years! I finally found a "pick your own" farm about 2 miles away, and replaced the blackberries with raspberries this last fall. (cheaper to buy what I need than grow them..) I have limited space, so I have to 'economize' some. It could be that I got bad plants of the Doyle, but that's been my experience. Let me know how the Doyle works out for you, I think I bought mine from Stark Bro's. they usually have pretty good stock. I have had good luck with a "5 in 1 Apple tree" from them. Jerry |

| We had such inconsistent luck with thornless blackberries and mediocre at best fruit that we are giving up, going to regular blackberry plants and just telling our kids to be careful when they go to pick them |

| I like the Kiowa blackberry plants, yummy! It has thorns, but I can put gloves on when I'm working with it. |

| I'm scared. So far I haven't heard one positive feedback. My order of my one plant was already shipped out so its too late for me now. |
