Should American Beautyberry berries persist after leaves?

I read from a reliable source that berries on the American Beautyberry/Callicarpa Americana typically remain on the plant after the leaves fall... unless eaten by wildlife, of course. However, the berries on a 1 gallon bush planted in a mostly shady Dallas spot last spring rotted on the plant before the leaves dropped. The attached photo shows what the few survivors looked like in mid-October.

Is this typical in my region or is it some fungal (other?) problem that can be treated? I really like photos of the dormant plant with the berries still on it, so am hoping there's a reasonable way to make that work in our yard. Thanks!
