I've grown the astringent type for years and love their very sweet fruit. They are beautiful care free trees in Texas (no spraying required), start fruiting when fairly young and produce a big fall crop. You can wrap the individual fruit in newspaper, put them in a box in a cool place and eat through the winter as they ripen.

I now have a young tree of the Tamopan variety which I purchased at Fanick's Nursery in San Antonio.

That is a great link. I found a local nursery that has Fuyu in stock. If memory serves me, I like the darker color fruit better when I find it in a store....which is rare. I think I'll get Fuyu because it's supposed to be good for hot growing areas.

Do you have any problems with heat and the one you have?

Me too; love both kinds. I bought a tree about 2 years ago and it fruited this past year (just a couple of fruits); the birds got to them.

Don't think it got enough watering; got way too hot here.
I'll try to do better this year.

I planted 2 figs last summer now plant to add a Kumquot and a Persimmon. I wonder if there is some sort of calculator to tell how many birds I'll add. Last year the opossums took out my melons before they ripened...at all!

No problems with them not taking the heat here. And with the astringent ones I know you can pick them before they are totally ripe and the birds notice them. That might be true of the other types too, but I have no experience with them.
