Have you thought about using just compost?

Or dress the beds in the fall with manure(aged if possible) and leaves and grass clippings, and let it sit all winter.
It should be very easy to turn it come spring--or you can just plant directly in it.

I use manure (donkey, of course) on all my beds in the fall and it is ready to go come spring. I just let the leaves that fall stay in the beds to decompose as well. I usually don't have much grass come up in the beds as I don't feed grain to the donkeys, but what is there can just be turned under ........so beds are easily cleaned. Matter of fact, I am headed outside to start on this little chore now.

Thank you all so much for the great advice! I'm going to try it all! I'm thinking side dressing is a necessity this time. I've learned my lesson - I'll definitely add manure, green and otherwise, in the fall.
Wantonamara, what microbes? And what is lady bug fertilizer? I've added nematodes before. Is that the same thing?

Last year I tried the Black Cow composted manure and really like it. It's more like well screened sticky black soil than manure. It comes in bags so it's easier to handle and can be used right from the bag.
