Scratch the bark with your thumbnail. If you see green (and it's almost certain you will), you're good.

I am experiencing the very same thing with my pomegranate tree, but when I trimmed the small branches it appears that the tree is still alive. I am going to leave it alone for a couple of weeks to see if new leaves start to emerge.

happened to mine too. i see a little bit of new growth on one of mine.

usually hardy from z7b to z11, your pom in Houston is alive, Mine also got zapped and I was a little nervous b/c I had already cleaned up the winter dead. But not to worry.

Same with my citrus, the last frost zapped a lot of branches and killed all the blossoms. I said to myself, uh oh, no fruit in 2014. But I'm happy to report that once it got warm, most have started blooming again. Some faster than others. I have oranges, satsumas, etc.

I'm in the dfw area and mine has finally got some tiny leaves. It is the same with my crepe myrtle.

I am so happy that both my ornamental and fruiting pomegranate trees have put out new leaves after the initial foliage was frozen a few weeks ago.
