What about Carolina Jasmine as ground cover?

I have a lone huge oak in the middle of my front yard. (front yard is 1.5 acres.) I have babied st. augustine all over the yard but I know it will thin out when it approaches this tree. It gets dappled shade till middle afternoon. I have carolina jasmine growing on a trellis and it is glorious every year. What if I planted it on the mound this tree is growing on? The mound is about fifty feet across. Would it damage the tree if the vines grew up the tree?
