Leaffooted bugs - a pest in the garden?

I've seen leaffooted bugs in my yard before, but up until now, have not thought of them as potential plant pests. Today, while moving a containered tomato plant indoors, I felt something on my hands. I shook it off, and noticed that it was a leaffooted bug. It looked smaller than the one's I've seen before, but it must have been either on the plant or around the rim.

I threw it outside, but then checked some books and online to see if there were any connections between that bug and plants. I started seeing a lot of reports of the bug being a pest on tomatoes, as well as other plants. Maybe I let a "criminal" get away?
