Could it be Texas star, Texas yellow star AKA Lindheimerii texana?

It certainly looks a lot like the first photo on the link. Then the rest of the photos are completely different. The others are limited to five petals and the leaves are jagged not rounded.

I'm thinking the comment was made because there were so many yellow daisy like wild flowers that were difficult to ID perhaps because each locality had a slightly different version of the same plant. Rose rustlers had a similar comment when trying to ID red China roses because there were so many variations.

I looked it up and that is what she meant. They are too difficult to tell apart.

I met lady Bird once and I told her what my Uncle , An Yankee mushroom hunter called brown mushrooms-, "LBJ's" or Little Brown Jobs. She nodded. She had been hunting mushrooms up in New Hampshire and they made sure she heard that one.

My coreopsis grows from a rosette. It is not a solitary stem, even when young.
