Newbie (sort of)

Hello everyone. Thought I would (re) introduce myself. I frequented the forum several years ago when I lived in Montgomery county before Ike destroyed my yard. We recently moved back to my home city of Pearland. We bought my grandparents house and renovated the inside and now I am ready to start on the flower beds. The front flower beds had pretty much gone to weed minus some daffodils and amaryllis bulbs and trumpet vine. The trumpet vine has taken over both the front and back yard. Hubby is getting my gf's tiller back in working order so I can till up the flower beds (dug up the bulbs) and start new ones in the back yard. Looking forward to sharing with ya'll and picking your brains on plant ideas.

Welcome back! Congratulations on your move and new-to-you home. What color is the house? What look or style are you thinking of? Any 'must haves'?

The house is greyish brick with grey trim The front flower bed will be semi-formal shade beds will low growing plants. DH does not want anything covering up the windows in the front. The back will be more of a controlled cottage look. One bed up against the back of the house will be a geared towards attracting hummers/butterflies. The rest of the yard stays shaded so lots of ferns and other shade plants.

Lucky you, the house is a neutral and you can choose what you like! For the front, are you thinking low like juniper or do you want more color? Are there already foundation plantings or are you starting from scratch? We got boxwood and dwarf yaupon with our older home and trimmed and kept them for year round green.

I'm north of you but Jewels of Opar, the lime colored one, really brightens my shady area and doesn't look gaudy. Mine blooms right up to first freeze. My design style is far from formal, I don't know what to suggest :-)
