Wait to prune it after it blooms.
Gardenias develop buds for the following year in the fall.
Just wait til it blooms this season, and when it's done, prune it.
Unless you don't care about the bloom this year, then prune it whenever you want.

I'll try to keep hubby's shears in check. He likes neat shapes and I like them however they have to be to have flowers. Down on the ground, he trims back ground cover that encroaches on the path edges. I like the way it softens the look of the path.

Ann, this is precisely why I don't mind that my DH doesn't like to garden (except for veggies), so that leaves all these decisions to my discretion.......LOL>

Yes, but at least he will usually wait if I tell him it's only until the flowers drop.
