Starting a Container Garden

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post and I have a couple of questions that I would really appreciate y'alls advice. I moved into the city of Houston from the rural area and I've got a patio so small I could spit across it. I moved here to go to school so to make things a bit more comfortable I've decided to use the patio as a container garden. Its about 17feet long and 10feet wide. Because I'm now a broke college kid I'm looking for tips and tricks to save money while having a little of my own green space.
So without further adieu:

If I make my own potting soil (the cheaper route) what ratio do you use in your own containers?

I want to do a color scheme of red, orange, yellow and white flowers. Do you have any recommendations of no fail plants?

What plants can I take free cuttings from that are easy to root?

Lastly, my containers and pots are sort of hodge podge that were free or cost very little. Does any one have any ideas for inventive containers or something that could be used as a container?

I came with a few plants already that are not themed at all. I'll list them here:
3 ponytail palms
1 Mediterranean fan palm
1 other unidentified palm
1 crimson mandevilla
1 yellow jasmine vine
1 red kalanchoe
2 yellow kalanchoe
Splider plant in a strawberry pot
2 plumeria that have not yet flowered

Thanks so much for an advice or tips you might have!
