Where are you wanting to grow this . Dallas too cold . A yes for san Antonio. I had one in Austin but out here in the hills outside of Austin , it was killed. I think the dirt needs to be fairly rich and water can not be xeric. I watered mine once a week in Austin during summers. MMMM. The smell was great. I miss my vine.
I am in Houston. I went ahead bought the single bloom vine from the local nursery. Do anyone know if it'll flower the first year of planting. I hope it survives here.
It will survive. It's a strong plant. Mine did not bloom the first year nor the second year, but it only got a couple of hours of full sun. Discouraged and not having a better place for it I dug it up and gave it to a friend who forgot about it and it died in the pot.
A full year later it surprised me by coming back -- I guess from a piece of root. It made a beautiful thickly foliaged plant, but took another two years for it to bloom with it's sweet tropically scented flowers, which start out almost white and then turn red.
I've since freed up a sunnier spot for it and moved it this past winter so am expecting great things. It proved to be fairly drought tolerant after it was established doing fine on a once a week deep watering. It's not like you've got to run out and water it every day or it wilts. It was fertilized with a couple of the large Fertilome pellets once in the spring. Nurseries sell them for about .25 each.
Photo of plant and flowers in it's too shady location. It makes a big plant so give it room. Nothing ever tried to eat it, not even the deer ...
Beautiful and fragrant! Just make sure you have something strong for it to grow up on. I love this vine when the breeze blows through it and carries its fragrance..
