Do I pull out my cabbage and kale or cut them back?

I am planting the spring garden bed and not sure what to do with my flowering cabbage and kale. They just got done flowering and I cut the flowers back to the top of the plant. Now, not sure if keep them like this (with hopes they perennialize) or pull them out, or cut them all the way to the ground? They are looking straggly and spent, but I'd like them to come back in the fall if possible. What do I do? Austin aea- zone 8B

They are cool-season plants, and the blooming is called bolting. As far as i know, they will not survive our summers. I usually leave the flowers on until they die back because the bees love them. I then pull them.

I left an ornamental kale in the flower bed for a year. I was amazed it made it easily through the summer and made a very interesting long contorted plant that wound around the flower bed.
