In Austin, I give my garden a tree to the west so it gets a break from the Summer Afternoon sun. It also gets some morning shade in some areas. Winter time, the sun moves to the south and the oaks loose most of their leaves so it gets more sun then. The sun seems to come between the trees. I have a large clearing to the south so the wintersun is not hindered at all. I get full day sun in the center of the garden in the summertime. I tend to put things that are more tender on the shady sides. Like the chard and cilantro and spinach bolt slower there at this time of year. The tomatoes, squash, eggplant are in the center. Those western trees are getting a bit tall for my liking and I have been sheering more of their over hanging branches off. One day that eastern cedar might be nixed totally.

I want has is spot on. I think the late afternoon sun can be a killer for a garden think 3-6 ish range. I think it really adds a good couple of weeks to plants like tomatoes. Also the cooling effect helps some as well from surrounding vegetation.

These are good comments. The idea of a full-sun site for a vegetable garden in at least central Texas seems not very smart at all. My garden gets full afternoon sun, but is shaded in the morning by my house, which is on the east side. Half a day of sun. I've have zero problem with seasonal vegetables of any kind for more than a decade there, though in the worst days of the summer there is some heat stress that is treatable by watering. In retrospect, full morning sun might be better than full afternoon sun, for the reasons others have given. Hadn't thought of it, but it's true, keeping afternoon sun off of tomatoes and peppers may add a few weeks to their fruiting.

Just make sure that you get ENOUGH sun. I have one garden that only gets midday sun and it doesn't do as well as the one with only early morning and late afternoon shade.
