beware of svbs in dfw area

The Squash vine borers are definitely out now in the Metroplex. I have inspected my squash/pumpkin vine jungle (and I mean JUNGLE!) and picked off a few eggs already. They are pretty big plants now, and no damage, and I've been burying the vines wherever I can, so I am not supper worried of the SVBs...

But... Yesterday, I went to Lowes in E. Richardson to pick up some supplies I needed, and I stopped by their vegetable plants rack, just out of curiosity (I grow all my stuff from seed anyway) to see what they had, and behold, I see a SVB moth sitting on one of the small squash plants!!! I had to fight the urge to sit there and pick the eggs off, but I didnt. I feel sorry for any unsuspecting person that buys that plant, and then has it die a few weeks afterwards.

Well I've learned this year that getting a very early start with Squash really helps. I started my seeds inside late Feb. and now I have pumpkins, acorn squash, and ball zucchini already growing on the vines.
