Just my opinion, but I think the red shrimp will be too big. I think you'd really like Fruit Cocktail shrimp plant.

Would 3 foot spacing create a thick mass of the red shrimp plant?

One of my favorite plants! I once planted a mass bed of red ones in a more dappled sun area than yours and they thrived. 3 feet apart sounds too far. 2 feet at most seems about right to me. They'll be fuller if you trim them up a couple of times a year..

I dearly love all the five varieties of shrimp plants I have. In a mild winter they never stop blooming. Mine are growing in shady conditions under the eaves (they are one of the plants recommended for dry shade) and wilt quite a bit when the sun hits them for an hour or two. I'm not sure how well they'd take full or near full sun conditions. Look around your neighborhood and see I guess. Or maybe someone reading this grows them in more sun than I do.

I have the red growing in full sun here in North Texas, Molly, and they do quite well. They require a bit more water than those in the shade, but they bloom so much better. I think they would be lovely in the area you describe. Mine, of course, die to the ground in the winter so I also have some in containers to get early blooms, but the inground ones come back and bloom beautifully...........just later than the ones in containers.

Mine red have always been in full sun also . They do like to be pruned, plus you get more plants because the cuttings root very well

I think I will go shrimp plant shopping tomorrow! Since I will also be removing the daylilies from the border of that bed (deer destroy them also), I believe I may purchase Walker's Low catmint as a border to the shrimp plants. That should work, right?
