Thank you for the French Hollyhock!!

Until about 2 weeks ago this hollyhock had about 3 blooms a day on it. I was kind of resigned to that being all it was going to do. I don't know who gave it to me, but I got it at the Trinity Park fall swap last year. So, to whoever you are, thank you so much!! I love it!

Thanks Barb :). I was thinking it might have been Weldon, but then I don't remember him being at the fall swap, come to think of it. Has yours been blooming long?

Kristi, that's gorgeous.

I have one I got from our plant swap from Sgt. Mahoney's wife and it's just gorgeous.

Do they come back each year or re-seed?

RE: Thank you for the French Hollyhock!!

Thanks Carol, I had heard of them refered to as both biennial and perennials.....but it can't be both :). So I managed to find a really great article about them from the Dallas Master Gardeners. Here's a portion of the article, but I've linked the whole thing below too. The Hollyhock info starts on page 6 which is where I found this blurb:

"Tina Dombrowski, Director of
Horticulture at Texas Discovery
Gardens, says that the French
Hollyhock is a great biennial which
reseeds easily but is not too weedy.
It looks best here in North Texas
during the spring and early summer
but then bounces back in the fall and
winter. It is usually a winter
evergreen and, depending on our
winter, she has even seen it blooming
in early February. French
Hollyhocks, 2-4 feet tall with a
spread of 1½ feet, are said to be
more resistant to rust, spider mites
and leaf miners than are the taller
common hollyhocks. They are also
tolerant of our alkaline soils. They
prefer well-drained soil with plenty
of sunlight, though they can be
grown in part shade. They can be
propagated from seed by direct
sowing outdoors in the fall or by
sowing indoors in pots in the spring
before the last frost. Allow the
pods to dry on the plant before
collecting the seeds."

The article is linked below.

tr, no one is allowed to stop looking at pictures around here!! Don't try to resist, it's stronger than you.....trust me!

Kristi, that is so pretty - and it doesn't seem to shed the blooms as quickly as my standard hollyhock. Great plant, obviously !!!

RE: Thank you for the French Hollyhock!!

What an absolutely gorgeous FH!! They will reseed profusely if you don't catch the seeds before they fall. They will reseed EVERYWHERE! LOL One of the original plants I planted last year came back and is blooming like crazy, so I think they are a perennial. I transplanted 3 of the bazillion volunteers that came up this spring and they are doing great. If anyone wants some seeds, I have some left from last year and I'll have some from this year soon.

I think I'm the one who brought the French (zebrina) hollyhocks to the spring swap, so I'll take it upon myself to say, "You're welcome!"

Mine really look good this year, the rain agrees with them.

(I'll try to have some at the Ovilla Garden Club Extravaganza.)

RE: Thank you for the French Hollyhock!!

Thanks again Sylvia, do you think you brought any to the fall swap last year? I didn't get this at the spring swap this year.

Carol, you're BOTH welcome :).

RE: Thank you for the French Hollyhock!!

I probably did;
I always have them, they self-seed like mad.

I admire zebrina hollyhocks;
they survive *everything*, & then they flower!

Note: hollyhocks are bi-annuals.
When they grow from seed, they make leaves & roots the first year, they they flower the second year, then, supposedly, they die, leaving their offspring to carry on the lineage.

I say "supposedly" because I think some hollyhocks either return after flowering, or maybe they fail to flower the second year due to stress or drought, & they come back the third year to blossom.

Anyway, if you grow them from seed, be careful not to pull 'em up when you don't see flowers the first year!
