I think you can rule out vitex.

If it's a salvia, branches will break off pretty easily...at least mine do.

Salvia greggii? I've often seen them with dead tips from the winter.

Caryopteris?

whatever, I would cut it back hard, about half way down. It is late for cutting but I still think it would be the best thing to do.

I sorta reminds me of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, (Brunfelsia australis)

Do the blooms change color as they age? I'd cut it back, way back.

Stachytarpheta cayennensis or Porterweed.

I love porterweed, but mine in San Antonio is an annual. If we could get a closer look at the leaves someone might be better able to tell what it is and then you'd know what to expect from it. But in the meantime as advised above, cut the dead branches out.

Phoenix, I think you got it! All the pictures I found online have the same crazy flower spikes and the leaves look similar. Thanks, everyone for all your help.

So does the same apply advice apply about cutting it way back? Or should I be more selective and only cut back the dead stuff?
